I recently tried to
correct the phase problems with software, but it is
severe. There are major speed fluctuations, too.
Even with the hi-rez versions available, the sound of
two of their albums are screwed up. This is why I have
to hang on to some of my older Atlantic and Warner
Brothers Chic CDs. The first S/T CD sounds particularly
dull.

I concur that the best-sounding version of the single
length of "Dance, Dance Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)"
is on Atlantic's "Golden Age Of Black Music (1977-
1988)". It matches my original 45.

I went online and the LP
length sounds nice on Atlantic 60th: On The Dance
Floor, Vol. 1. I may do some more searching myself
to
recreate a nicer sounding 45 length.

BTW, Nile Rodgers has reformed Chic, including a new
record deal.

Edited by eriejwg

    Author: crapfromthepast
Subject: 8347
Posted: 05 May 2015 at 6:33pm

This song sounds incredibly awful on all the CDs I have.

The LP length is 8:19.

It sounds really horrendous on Atlantic's Dance Dance Dance The Best Of (1991), which is a tragically awful-sounding disc. This is before Atlantic brought Rhino into the fold. Bill Inglot had nothing to do with this disc, unfortunately. The same analog transfer is used on:

Rhino Special Editions' cheapie Disco Hits Vol. 2 (1992)

Rhino's Everybody Dance (1995)

Flashback/Rhino's Dance Dance Dance And Other Hits (1997)

All of the above sound equally terrible. There seems to be some left/right channel tape alignment problem on this disc, where the high-end gets badly screwed up if you sum to mono. There's not much hi-hat to begin with, and if you sum to mono, it completely disappears. I know the original tapes can't possibly be this bad, because the Bill Inglot-mastered 45 versions on Rhino's Disco Years sound stunning. If anyone can suggest a better-sounding Chic collection, I'm all ears.

By the way, the hi-hat is in the right channel.

The 45 length is 3:42, with a fade from 3:30 to 3:42.

The best-sounding version of the 45 length that I have is Atlantic's Golden Age Of Black Music (1977-1988) (1988). Here, there's a bit more hi-hat (also in the right channel), and it doesn't disappear when you sum to mono.

It sounds like the same source tape as Golden is used on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 27 Dance Fever (1992), but the left and right channels are reversed. The same analog transfer is also used for:

JCI's Only Rock 'N Roll #1 Radio Hits 1975-1979 (1996)

Warner Special Products' 2-CD Seventies Party Mix (1996)

Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 46 '70s Dance Party 1978-1979 (1997; differently EQ'd digital clone)

Madacy's Rock On 1977 Dance Dance Dance (1998)

All of the above have their left/right channels reversed (hi-hat is on the left for these discs.)

For the 45 length, go with Atlantic's Golden Age Of Black Music (1977-1988) (1988).

For the LP length, I'm open for suggestions. Anything has to be better than what I listed above.

Edited by crapfromthepast
