I know where you're coming from! The first oldies station I listened to in the late '60s played an uptempo version of Jimmy Clanton's "Just A Dream" that was included on a 1969 double-LP compilation album the station offered for sale. The album was mastered locally at Kay Bank Studios, with the tracks dubbed from the station's on-air singles and LPs. Considering the sources and the 10 to 11 songs per side, the results weren't too bad, aside from the occasional early fade. With most of the tracks already long out of print, I was happy to have them available at all.

Within a year, I bought a new old stock Oldies 45 label reissue of "Just A Dream" at the local Musicland store and absolutely hated it. The tempo was soooo sloooow compared to the version on the oldies station. I thought it had to be a remake, but it was, in fact, the original Ace recording, with "ACE" and the original Ace matrix numbers etched in the deadwax, along with the Monarch delta numbers (Vee-Jay would eventually distribute the Ace label by the early '60s, so finding the original version on Vee-Jay's own Oldies 45 reissue label shouldn't have come as a surprise. Still finding legitimate product in the retail pipeline four years after Vee-Jay's demise was the bigger surprise.)

It turned out that the oldies station had been playing remakes of "Just A Dream" and "Go Jimmy Go" from the 1964 Best Of Jimmy Clanton album on Philips. I say that based on my own experience. RCA was highly dependable when it came to keeping their original singles masters available over the long haul in the Gold Standard Series (designated with the "447-" prefix.) Some of those original 1950s RCA Victor singles lacquer cuttings - identifiable by their straight-across, machine-stamped matrix numbers - were still being used on some Gold Standard Series reissues into the 1970s on the red label. But even the replacement cuttings with the curved, machine-stamped matrices were sourced from the original singles master tapes, as evidenced in the case of the Prado single by the shared E4FW-5127 matrix number.

That first youtube clip is most definitely a re-recording. For a great-sounding source of the hit version of "Cherry Pink...", go with Nipper's Greatest Hits-The 50's Volume 1 CD [RCA 8466-2-R].

There seem to be other non-original Perez Prado recordings in circulation, too. One of my earliest 45 purchases in 1958 was Perez' "Patricia." I liked the B-side, "Why Wait" almost as much as the A-side. Good luck trying to find "Why Wait" in its 1958 version these days; every digital version I've encountered has extra instrumentation added that detracts from the performance. The hit from 1955 by Perez Prado & His Orchestra was
listed 10 weeks on Billboard's Best Seller Chart. Born
just one year earlier I heard this tune many years later
(an liked it very much), however it was most probably the
wrong version and it was from different sampler CDs. Now
I guess for about 30 years I was on the "wrong path"
thinking "my" version (with 2:25 minutes runtime) would
be the original hit version:

Now it seems to be clear that this version was really the
