The 45 edit can be found on "Encore: The Very Best Of Rod Stewart, Vol. 2",
along with other 45 edits. This CD is mattered pretty loud though.

While you can recreate that edit, many a stalwart Top 40
AM station played the LP cut intact off the LP too. This

The LP version of "I Was Only Joking" runs 6:06 and sounds nice on the multi-disc Storyteller (1989).

You can recreate the 45 edit from the LP version on Storyteller:

Remove 0:00.0 to 0:22.6 of the LP version.

Segment 1
Extends from 0:00.0 to 2:54.5 of the 45 edit
Extends from 0:22.6 to 3:17.1 of the LP version

Remove 3:17.1 to 3:35.1 of the LP version.

Segment 2
Extends from 2:54.5 to 3:14.0 of the 45 edit
Extends from 3:35.1 to 3:54.6 of the LP version

Remove 3:54.6 to 4:12.3 of the LP version.

Segment 3
Extends from 3:14.0 to 3:18.7 of the 45 edit
Extends from 4:12.3 to 4:17.0 of the LP version

Remove 4:17.0 to 4:34.9 of the LP version.

Segment 4
Extends from 3:18.7 to 4:51.9 (end) of the 45 edit
Extends from 4:34.9 to 6:08.1 (end) of the LP version

Your mixdown will run 4:51.9 (including outro silence), 4:49 (including outro silence), with edits at 0:00.0, 2:54.5, 3:14.0, and 3:18.7.
