Pat,
my apologies ... even with all notes about this fade i was
fooled by the extremely low level on the fade. It won't
even show in my meters but when i cranked it max i can
hear the fade reaching the 2:28 mark.

Hmmm I checked my copy of "Guilty Pleasures" again and "Almost Summer" runs (2:28). I can't imagine Sony selling enough copies of this cd to go to a second pressing and remastering this song!

Ah yes, i asked my buddy Gordon why he thought that was a
disc dub .. apparently there is a small digital "click"
that occurs on the CD.   
That can happen for a number of reasons.

But this CD does indeed use a tape, provided to Sony by
MCA special products. There was no reason to use vinyl.

Oh, the actual time of the CD is 2:25, not 2:28. So that
would really make it :11 shorter!

i stand corrected...the vinyl 45 runs 2:36 like aaron
mentions above....so the db entry should be amended for the
lone cd appearance to says '0:08 shorter than 45'...i think
the 'guily pleasures' cd sounds like a tape source....i do
not detect any surface noise or other vinyl type

JL, you can't depend on YouTube any more than Wikipedia for accuracy. Is the poster's turntable speed accurate? Is the entire record being played? Many YouTube needledrops I've seen - including this one - clip off the end of the record.

And what about the actual record being played? The DJ 45 shown in that clip (MCA S45-1982) is not the standard U.S. DJ 45. MCA usually used that numbering sequence for promo-only 45s which had no standard commercial counterpart. The promotional KRTH customized version, for example, was issued as MCA S45-1986.

My standard issue U.S. DJ 45 (MCA 40891) carried the same catalog number as the commercial 45. Although it states a running time of (2:38) the actual time of (2:36) matches that of Aaron's dub. The song has a very long fade out that is really quiet at the end. So, I'm on a 1970s kick lately, and I've been going back and dusting off
(or trying to find) some old 1970s tunes that I either forgot about or never
knew in the first place.

I've probably only heard this song a few times in my life since it never
pops up on compilations (not even Beach Boys' compilations).

I've heard the "Guilty Pleasures" CD but do not own it. I never bothered to
buy it for "Almost Summer" because of the database's notation that the
2:29 version of that song is shorter than the 45 or LP version and,
therefore, not completely the real deal.

I do not own the 45 or LP (and never have) and I have absolutely no doubt
that they run 2:37/2:38 as reported above.

But.... in trying to find a place to listen to this elusive track, I looked it up
on YouTube and, lo and behold, there was a video of somebody playing
the Promo 45 of this song. From a screenshot, i can see that the Promo
45 appears to be labeled MCA Records 545-1982 (MC7244). It's kind of
blurry, but I believe that is what it says.

Ok, so what's the big deal? Well, the Promo 45 in the video is not running
2:38 (like the Commercial 45 and LP apparently do), but is running closer
to 2:28/2:29, which is what the song runs on "Guilty Pleasures."

So, what's the story? Was there in fact a Promo 45 that had a 2:29 run
time that was 9 seconds shorter than the Commercial 45/LP version? It
appears there was and, if so, is this then the DJ version that appears on
