Just got a full copy of Hip-O's Ultimate Collection (1999), and it's truly fantastic in every way.

Writer, producer, musician, and discography credits on every track. Chronological track order. Includes a rare B-side, two excellent soundtrack songs, and two songs released after their stint with MCA.

Fantastic sound, too. Excellent source tapes, excellent dynamic range with no (or extremely minimal) clipping, fantastic EQ, and no evidence of noise reduction anywhere. It even includes the full opening note of "Secret Separation", which until now I didn't realize was clipped a bit on the One Thing Leads To Another collection. Huge props to mastering engineer Doug Schwartz, who also did the Donnie Iris Millennium Collection that I like so much.

I heard the proper LP version from Ultimate Collection, where it runs 4:20. It sounds great here - excellent dynamic range, nice EQ, no hint of noise reduction, and terrific source tapes. If all the tracks on Ultimate sounds this good, then I heartily endorse this disc as the go-to for Fixx songs.

The 45 is an easy edit: remove 2:18.5 to 3:08.7 of the LP version on Ultimate Collection. The edit points are on downbeats, in a very logical place.

And the proper LP version is WAY better than that 1987 rerecording that I'd gotten used to all these years.

The band re-recorded "Red Skies" for the 1987 album
"React" and that version, very annoyingly, kept turning up
on their comps.
FYI - the only comp to feature all original versions of
their hits is "Ultimate Collection." Most tracks are
single versions, but "Red Skies" is the LP version, which
runs (4:20).   I can check later to see if the 45 is an
edit.

Could you point out any mix differences between the 45 & LP. I always preferred the full-length version, but I didn't know the edit was also a remix. Great song. The version I have on my original CD 'Greatest Hits-One Thing Leads To Another' is a putrid alternate take missing the real hook of the original (the staccato oh-oh-oh-o-o-o-oh-oh).

The 45 is a different mix than the LP, so you can't edit it down from the LP version.

I have the 45 version on Rhino's Just Can't Get Enough Vol. 8, where it runs about 3:33 (including outro silence).

I have the LP version on MCA's Greatest Hits One Thing Leads To Another, where it runs about 4:36 (including outro silence).

Not a Top 40 hit, but the 45 has a listed time of 3:27.
The album version runs 4:21.
