Off-topic, but Bobby Caldwell recorded a fantastic duet with Toni Tennille that was the closing track of Captain & Tennille's 1982 unreleased-in-America album, "More Than Dancing," a ballad called "Come to Me." It's such a shame... that totally could have been a hit song if it had seen a U.S. release. I discovered there is actually an edit in the 45 version of "What You Won't Do For Love". Boy, this song is a lot more yacht-rocky/Earth Wind And Fire-y than I remembered. Smooth soul goodness!

45 version (about 3:29)

This first appeared on a cheapie Sony CD called Great '70s Dance Grooves (Sony Music Special Products 22347, copyright 1992). The credits on the back of this disc say, in all caps: "ALL SELECTIONS ARE COURTESY OF RHINO RECORDS, INC." In addition to having the first appearance on CD of the 45 version/mix of "What You Won't Do For Love," it also has the 45 edit of "Jam On It" by Newcleus (the only place I have this edit). Unfortunately, it has an incredibly bad-sounding version of "Dance Across The Floor" by Jimmy "Bo" Horne, but the other nine tracks sound great.

The same analog transfer is used on Rhino's Didn't It Blow Your Mind Vol. 20 (1995), but with absolute polarity inverted (insignificant). Both discs sound quite nice.

It's safe to say that any other 3:29 versions of "What You Won't Do For Love" are also based on the mastering from Great '70s Dance Grooves.

LP version (about 4:45)

Of the handful of compilations that I have, I found two distinct masterings for the LP version.

The first is on Rhino's Smooth Grooves Vol. 2 (1995), where it is indeed smooth and does indeed groove. There are digital clones on:

• Time-Life's 2-CD Body And Soul Vol. 2 Love And Tenderness (1998) - differently-EQ'd digital clone
• Rhino's promo PRCD 7406 Let The Music Set The Mood (1999) - also a differently-EQ'd digital clone, but with left and right channels reversed

The second is on Madacy's Rock On 1978 (1996), which sounds every bit as good as the Rhino disc, but extends about a second longer. These Madacy Rock On discs seem to be nearly entirely made up of level-adjusted masterings from earlier CDs, but I don't know the source of this track. Based on the timings listed in the database, it could be one of the Bobby Caldwell CDs on Sin-Drome Records, but I can't confirm. The same analog transfer is used on:

• Rhino's Smooth Grooves: Jazzy Soul Volume Two (2000)
• Time-Life's 2-CD Classic Soul Ballads Nite And Day (2004) - differently-EQ'd digital clone
• Quality Records compilation Old Skoolin' (1995) - level-shifted digital clone; not in database, pretty hard to find, might be Canadian because has "Distributed in U.S.A. by..." credit

All of the CDs I listed in this post sound terrific, with excellent dynamic range, warm EQ, and no hint of noise reduction on the fade. You'll be pleased with any of them.

You know for the last 40 years I just assumed the 45
was an early fade of the LP version. The database
agrees with that since sources are labeled "45 length"
or "LP Length".
For all these years I've only played the LP version
because I always preferred the long ending. So I never
compared them until now. I happened to rip the 45
length from the Rhino CD Soul Hits and as soon as I
heard it I said "wait....this is not the mix I've
been hearing for 40 years!"

Turns out the 45 is a different mix from the LP as
well as an early fade. The mix on the 45 is a narrower
mix and has various other differences, like the horns
are mixed to the center but on the LP they are split
left and right. The backing vocals on the bridges in
the 45 are mixed to the left channel, but on the LP
they are split left and center. Lots of other little
things too.

So I suggest an update to for the database to indicate
"LP Version" and "45 Version".

Sounds to me like the 45 was the first mix and then
when time came time to mix the LP they made a fuller,
wider sounding mix. That's my theory anyway.
