Author: NightAire
Subject: 9540
Posted: 23 January 2021 at 4:45pm

The Big Money is the opening track from Rush's LP Power Windows, released on September 26th, 1985. Wikipedia says it peaked at #45 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #4 on the Mainstream Rock chart, and has been included on several compilation albums.

The album version can be edited to match the 7" single release. Instructions are below.

Whoever created the edit was certainly trying to earn his or her keep that day; I would describe the edits performed on The Big Money as being similar to being nibbled to death by a duck. This wasn't the most complicated edit I've ever re-created, but I think it may have been the most tedious.

I used the 24 bit / 48 kHz hi-rez release of the album to edit down to match the 45, and it has over a second of silence at the beginning of the track. If you're using a rip from a CD with a tighter starting point, you'll want to adjust the times accordingly.

Each line's time assume you are looking at the newly edited file from the line before.

Remove:

0:09 - 0:15 (6.6 seconds)
0:24 - 0:29 (4.9 seconds)
0:27 - 0:30 (2.4 seconds)
0:29 - 0:31 (2.4 seconds)
1:01 - 1:04 (2.4 seconds)
1:53 - 1:55 (2.4 seconds)
2:16 - 2:21 (4.9 seconds)
2:37 - 2:50 (13.2 seconds)
3:09 - 3:12 (3.3 seconds)
3:58 - 4:05 (6.6 seconds)

The recording of the 7" single I have unfortunately cuts off before the vinyl has completely faded to silence so the exact end is a guess but my belief is that it ends somewhere between 4:34 and 4:36. (My dub runs 4:31).

The fade starts at approximately 4:16 and while it is a slow fade, it is noticeably faster than the LP fade (which starts later). Since the fade is longer than 15 seconds, my expectation is that the fade ran 18 to 20 songs as it was nearly gone when the file ended.

I am unaware of a digital source for this single, so I thought this might be useful. If someone else has the vinyl and can time to absolute silence, I will update the end point I've listed here.
