Does anyone know the edit points for this to re-create
the 4:10 single version of this song?

LP version (6:21)

I have the LP version on Arista's Al Stewart collection Songs From The Radio The Best Of (1992). It sounds very nice here, with an excellent dynamic range, a nice EQ, seemingly low-generation source tapes, a very long tail to the fade, and some pleasing hiss that extends over the whole fade (so no evidence of noise reduction). The same analog transfer is used on TM Century's track no 00108877, but faded about two seconds earlier and with added noise reduction (listen as the hiss disappears on the fade); avoid.

I also have it on Rhino's Al Stewart Greatest Hits (2004). Here, it's about 4 or 5 dB louder than the 1992 collection, with a slight boost to the high-end and low-end frequencies compared to that release. It runs to about the same length as the 1992 collection. If you need to quibble, the dynamic range is a little smaller here than the 1992 set. But it still sounds great here. Producer Alan Parsons made a great-sounding record, and it sparkles on both of these CDs.

45 version (4:10)

It doesn't exist on CD, so you'll have to edit it yourself. It's one edit and an early fade.

Here are editing instructions, using Songs From The Radio The Best Of as the source:

Segment 1
Extends from 0:00 to 1:26.2 of the LP version and the 45 version
Ends at snare hit before very long, high sax note

Remove the 176 beats from 1:26.2 to 2:54.4 of the LP version.

Segment 2
Begins at snare hit before very long, high sax note
Extends from 2:54.4 to 5:39.9 of the LP version
Extends from 1:26.2 to 4:11.7 of the 45 version

Fade
24 beats long
Starts on snare hit just after the start of the word "oh-whoa"
Extends from 5:28.1 to 5:39.9 of the LP version
Extends from 3:59.9 to 4:11.7 of the 45 version

Your mixdown will run 4:11.7 with an edit at 1:26.2 and a fade from 3:59.9 to 4:11.7.
There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

A great song lost to time. Doesn't even get spins on
Sirius.

The problem with "Song on the Radio" is that it has too much saxophone! Instead of saving it for an epic solo, it's blaring through the entire song.
