Which was the airplayed version of this single?

I recently bought the euro version of "Sweet Love-The Very Best of Anita Baker" and it has mostly single edits. In it, "Rapture" (4:12) is an edit of the album version.

But I also have an mp3 labeled "remix" and indeed it is that since I hear additional production on it. This one shows a running time of 4:07.

When I purchased the CD online I thought I might get the latter mentioned version, but got the edit.

Another question: the "remix" mp3 definitely sounds from a digital source, anyone know where it is available on CD?

Johann, in 1994, long before a commercial greatest hits CD for her came out, radio received an 11-track promo called "Retrospective" (PRCD 9010-2). She had taken a couple of years off, had two kids, and Elektra was looking to re-launch her and her then-new album, "Rhythm Of Love", by reminding radio of her track record. Cut 4 is "Caught Up In The Rapture." There is no listed time, but the actual time is (4:09). I can't say for sure if it is your desired (4:07) version, but as I've said before, 1987 ("Caught Up"'s...year of release) is by FAR the hardest year to hope to get "specialty mixes" anywhere on CD, due to the very few promo CDs put out then, coupled with the 1988 advent of multi-label, current release, weekly radio samplers. You thought you heard digital for it; what I have COULD be it.

Hi Jim, thanks for the inside information, I love all these stories that I mostly never knew because I was just a listener!

There is a way to easily tell if this remix is on "Retrospective" if you have a minute.

The album version and edit start with the same synth sound, and after almost three seconds she comes in.

The remix kicks right in with her voice, so it's missing that first section of the two above versions.

This intro is also almost acapella except for a piano and a couple of sound effects backing her voice.

Jim, I googled a bit and found what very much looks like a source for this remix.

A UK 7" single where apparently the version has been labeled "remix edit" so I bet it's the one in question.

http://www.vinyltap.co.uk/shop/item/526546276059487.aspx

Yet this mp3 file sounds way too good to come from a 7". Too "tidy", "artificial" even for a 12" vinyl. I looked for the most minor distortion throughout, boosted the volume when it fades to detect some kind of noise and nothing.

Maybe it was included on one of those promo compilation CD's. Unfortunately whoever ripped it did not write the album it came from on the file's tag.

Sorry, Johann, it is not the remix on "Retrospective." But based on some of the 45 cleanup I've heard by the guys on this board, I will NEVER again say to myself, "Sounds like it came from a digital source." So did their 45s! Our station also got sent 12" vinyl for MANY 80's hits. I have a TON of them. These were NOT remix 12-inchers - they were, most times, the same "single version" track on both sides - sometimes at 33 1/3, sometimes at 45RPM. It was a MUCH cleaner sound than dubbing off promo 45s - almost NEVER heard a pop or a click on those. About 1/4 to 1/3 of the mid-80s hits had one of these for radio. All the major labels did this for radio. We also did get in plenty of both "commerical remix 12" singles" and "promo 12" remix singles" as well. In the last years of vinyl's heyday, the always-good vinyl quality radio received got EVEN better. As a listener, I always wondered how what I heard on the radio sounded so much better than the pop-and-click-fests I bought at my local record store! I think HitDisc is one of your ONLY remaining options for digital on it, Johann. We didn't like their sound, but I DO believe they may have been putting out at least SOME current compilations as early as '87.--PS just saw your UK find on it; don't rule it out!

Jim, interesting, I recall seeing several 1 track promo 12" singles for sale through the years.

Do you think I could send you the mp3 file so you give me your opinion as to its source?

Johann: Your ears are MUCH better than mine for that stuff. I know Todd Ireland and Aaron are both away on business for a couple of days - when they get back, ask them. They both have AMAZING audio ears for details like this. I know what I know, and I know what I DON'T know. I DON'T know audio. I do want to help you get to the bottom of this, though. That's where you should go next.

Unfortunately, I don't know this track very well, so I wouldn't even know what I was listening for.
