Just came across a longer (4:27) version of this tune where it's at the beginning that it is longer. On the common version (LP version I take it), he starts singing at about :18 where on this one (in stereo) he starts in at about :36. Would this be a stereo 45? sounds like it's from vinyl. Also, towards the end at 3:36 of the common version B.J. sings "ma-ma-ma-ma-mama" whereas on this longer version at 3:54 it is missing.

Yes that sounds like it is one of the 2 versions of this 45 (the longer one of course). I have the dj copy which has both the long and short versions on it and I understand that the commercial 45's were pressed in both long and short versions also.

I believe the first commercial copies were the longer stereo version, a different mix than the more common shorter version. The first DJ copies as Pat noted were long stereo/short mono. The short mono promo mix has different reverb on it and is exclusive to the mono promo. Then Scepter released a second DJ promo which shortened the song to match the mono promo length, and remixed the song for stereo. So they released a second stereo/mono promo both at the short length. That stereo version (containing the ma ma ma ma that was mixed out of the long version) became the more common version, issued as a single and also placed on the album. I don't believe the long version was ever placed on the album.

kerry was kind enough to send me a dub of his 45 version
which actually runs 4:11 and NOT 4:08 as the db states.......does anyone know what the runout groove markings are that identifies the 4:11 commercial 45 versus the 4:27 version that i have?.....my commercial 45 has 'S- 61727-1G' |

Just checked my mono/stereo 45 of Rock And Roll Lullaby by B.J. Thomas on Scepter Records...the runout groove markings for the mono side are 61727-2B-RE and on the stereo side the markings are S-61727-2B-RE.
