I just timed both sides of the promo 45 for "Never, Never Gonna Give Ya Up." The "Stereo Short Version" side has a printed time of 3:58, but it runs exactly 4:00. The "Stereo Long Version" side has a printed time of 4:44, but it runs 4:40.
Currently, CDs in the database that say "dj 45 edit" run :06 too long. Assuming that all of the 4:46 CDs contain the exact same version, the one and only edit is in the correct place, but the fade runs too long. |

my commercial 45 issued as 20th century 2058 states the
version as 'stereo short version' with a listed run time on the label as 3:58 but actually runs 4:04.....the run out groove info is 'M-2058-AS'.....the 45 is the same as the 'icon' and 'icon 2' cd version except that they run 0:05 short at 3:59..... |

Switching topics to "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up"... I have a CD claiming to have the promo 45 version of this song which runs (3:59) (It's a custom edit that was given to me.) It starts off with the high hat for five seconds and then edits to where the version on All-Time Greatest Hits begins. I did not check the edits further to see if it matches up the rest of the way. Before I spend time doing that, let me ask, do I have a bogus edit, or does the short promo version differ from the commercial 45? The database claims that ATGH has the 45 version but :09 longer. If the commercial 45 and short promo version are identical, then one of the two versions I have is incorrect. Can anyone help me out? Second, Jim says that the short promo and stock 45 versions of "Never, Never Gonna Give You Up" are the same. Given that information, I am happy to report that the version on ATGH is NEITHER the 45 nor LP version, as they clipped off the high hat on the intro. My custom edit, without checking all the edit points, appears to be correct. above i grabbed a few comments from another barry white thread where 'never, never gonna give you up' was mentioned....jim and aaron are correct....the version on 'atgh' edits off the high hat intro for approximately 0:04.50....then the 'atgh' version is the same until the 3:55 mark where the 45 fades out while the 'atgh' cd version continues.....so the correct vinyl 45 version can be re-created by adding the high hat into from the so called '45 version' in the db to the 'atgh' cd version and then fading the 'atgh' version for 0:06 from 3:55 to 4:01 on the 'atgh' cd version....the vinyl 45 run time is 4:04....there is a slight pitch adjustment as well... The A-side of my U.S. commercial 45 (which is the 'stereo short version' side) runs 4:00. The matrix is 'M-2058-AS-2'. The final '2' suggests that this is a later pressing than Ed's 45.
My commercial 45 actually matches Aaron's description of the promo 45 (with the 'stereo long version' on the B-side). My 45 is definitely a commercial copy. The Record Research publications confirm that the commercial 45 also has the long version on the B-side. |

According to 45cat, first issue 45s run 3:58 "Short Version" on one side and
4:44 "Long Version" on the other while second issue 45s run 3:58 on one side and have an instrumental titled "No, I'm Never Gonna Give Ya Up" running 4:24 on the other (these are label times, not necessarily actual). AnotherProf also has a 45 posted that DOES run 3:58 not 4:04. According to 45cat label scans, this second issue 45 did not feature "Short Version" on the label, so perhaps the second pressing DID run 3:58. YoutTube link Edited by davidclark |
