Thanks to eriejwg for the mp3 of the "official" edit of this. I was a bit surprised that they left in the word "clockin'", which we were more concerned about getting complaints on than the word "ho". I took out the "clockin' the ho" phrase & replaced it with drumbeats from elsewhere in the song. Even so, I doubt this got any daytime airplay (being in a decidedly non-urban/rhythmic market). The station lost a lot of office/business listenership during a brief foray into AAA, we weren't about to repeat the mistake!

During my 8 year tenure as music director at this particular CHR we made any number of custom edits of songs. I only saved copies of a handful of them.

I'm curious to know why your station thought "clockin'" would be offensive. In this context, it's merely slang for "watching," although there may be a definition that I'm not aware of.

I wouldn't think that "Clockin'" is nearly as offensive as "gettin' laid", or "me and the crew used to do her" which is still both in all versions of the song.

Good point, Steve. There are definitely other "colorful" phrases in the song that could have raised an eyebrow back in the day. We always played the LP version from a TM Century GoldDisc, and I don't recall anyone complaining.

I have this promo:
http://www.discogs.com/Bell-Biv-Devoe-Poison/release/1582083

Why is the "radio edit" running 5:27? Also the no listed version is also running 5:27.

Perhaps you could pop on your 12" promo if it's accessible, but I think
those are all remixes. The "radio edit" and non-described version are
shorter edits of the "Mental Mix". I believe one of the New Edition
compilations that feature solo hits uses one of the 5:27 versions.
