Can the 3:15 promo re-issue be edited down from the 45 version found on
"Piano Man: The Very Best of Billy Joel" import CD?

Thanks

Yes, it can, but I cannot recall the edits. It's been many years since I created my file, but I recall that the mix is the same between the short promo edit and the commercial 45 (i.e. different from LP version/mix).

Thanks Aaron. Since we are on the subject can you or anyone else
describe the mix differences? I believe this was the case with "The
Entertainer" as well.

Update: never mind found the details here:

Hi, I'm new to the forum, so please forgive me if this
has been discussed already: When I try to upload the
single version of "Piano Man" to iTunes, it recognizes
it as the album version. I can't even play the single
version through iTunes. Any way around that glitch?

Not sure
what you're getting at, but it sounds like you may be uploading your
music to a cloud and trying to use iTunes Match?

If you care at all about the differences between single vs. album versions,
as most of us here do, iTunes Match is a disaster since it will often replace
any song you upload from your personal cd collection with the version
that exists in the iTunes library. iTunes Match does not readily
distinguish between different versions of the same song and will just
replace what you upload with whatever it has.

iTunes (US) does not have the single version of "Piano Man" available for
purchase. So, if you have the CD "Piano Man: The Very Best of Billy Joel"
(which has the single version of "Piano Man") and you're trying to upload it
to your personal iTunes library and using iTunes Match, it really wouldn't
shock me that it's replacing the single version of "Piano Man" with one of
the many examples of the album version that exists in the iTunes
database. That's how iTunes Match works and that's why I don't use it--
it's a disaster if you care about maintaining different versions of songs.

I agree 100% with JL's post.

If you're serious about your music library, avoid iTunes at all costs, and get yourself a serious music library management program.

I use mp3tag to manage the tags in my files, Winamp to do searches for a particular song, artist, or album, and foobar2000 to do day-to-day stuff. All three are free, and won't do anything unexpected that will destroy your library. There are many more out there, but these will get you started.
There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.
