My station always played the "Radio Edit Without Intro" version, which is not currently mentioned in the database. It's the same as the "Radio Edit," but it removes the spoken part on the intro and just lets the instrumental play until the chorus.

Aaron, our station also played that specific version on-the-air back in 1998. Here are the full song details, from my promo CD single:

2-Radio Edit Without Intro (listed 4:00; actual 3:59)
3-LP Version (listed & actual 4:51)
4-Club Version (listed 7:40; actual 7:39)

I've discovered an interesting situation regarding Brandy & Monica's "The Boy Is Mine"... Cassette single copies feature the "Radio Edit Without Intro" and have an actual run time of 3:59. Meanwhile, Ed reports his commercial CD single copy also runs 3:59 but, unlike the cassette single, features the "Radio Edit with Intro"!

Given that there are currently several database CDs with a "45 version" comment, it will probably need to be further clarified whether these discs consist of the cassette single version or the CD single version.

According to Joel Whitburn, there was never a commercial cd single issued for this song. I have what I would consider a "commercial cd single", Atlantic 84118 which features 5 versions -- 1) album version, 2) club mix, 3) radio with intro, 4) album instrumental and 5) a cappella. You can draw your own conclusion as to which version is the official single version but I have updated the database to let you know that all 45 versions on cd to date feature the intro.

Pat:

My research indicates there was a 2-track U.S. CD single release on Atlantic 84089. The track listing is:

1) Radio Edit with Intro
2) Instrumental

I'm not entirely certain however if this is a commercial or promo CD single release. Perhaps Ed might be able to chime in with more information regarding his CD single.

I also own the 2-track commercial CD single (it's a cardboard picture sleeve with a slide-out plastic holder, common at that time).

Pat: From what I understand, Whitburn doesn't show CD single availability for songs that debuted prior to 12/05/98, unless that was the only configuration it was available in, which is why Top Pop Singles only lists cassette and vinyl for that particular song. The original Billboard chart does indicate that cassette, CD, vinyl maxi, vinyl, and CD maxi singles were all commercially released.

my commercial cd single issued as atlantic 84089 contains two tracks as listed below

1-the boy is mine (radio edit with intro) (no listed time; actual 3:59)
2-the boy is mine (instrumental) (no listed time; actual 4:51)

the format of the cd single is the same as mstgator above a cardboard picture sleeve with a slide-out plastic holder....hope this helps

Thanks, gentlemen. So it can be said then that all current database CD appearances of "The Boy Is Mine" running 3:58-3:59 are actually the "CD single version".
