Todd, the version of "Medicine Man" on the Dick Bartley cd is not the same as the version found on the Collectables cd. The Collectables cd not only has overlap on the introduction but it fades in while the Bartley cd starts at full volume, runs too slow and ends cold while the 45 fades out.

This is gonna be a strange question, but would you expect anything less? :)

Does anyone know what the opening lyric is (whether it's "comatose" or something else)?

I always thought it was "come-a-close"...

OK, I'm confused about something else. I have the 45 version from Skyline, and another version that runs (3:11).

This (3:11) version fades in at the start, but the fade-in starts at what would be the (:12) mark of the 45. And it fades out (unlike the Bartley CD). And it's stereo, so I can't just tack on the mono 45 intro. (Although were I able to tack on the intro, the resulting file would time out at about (3:23), which would closely match the Canadian 45 pressing.)

So at the risk of getting a smart answer, what do I have here? :)

Ok,

from my recollection of this, the LP and 45 versions were
edited and re-arranged from the session tape.
I believe the "neither" version which is on the Bartley
CD, .....and also appears on The Very Best Of Cashman &
West (they own they're own masters) .... that this is
the song as it was recorded.
They remixed it for CD release.

The original hit version, both 45 and LP, i think use
the "come-a-close" section from later in the song as the
fade-in for the song, instead of the intro you hear on
the remix.
If this is true, all one need do is compare the intro and
the later sections, and re-edit it to match.

If i am wrong... then,
nevermind. :-)

I always remember the 45 version starting with the bass solo like the remix, but ending with a pasted-on repeat of the "Hold On" bridge as a fade-out.

The "problem" with the remix is it's too clean sounding & can't be edited on the album mix (to attempt to creat a stereo 45 version) without sounding jarring. Editing the remix to attempt to create the 45 creates a version missing the 'great rock & roll feel' of the single & album mix.
