I was very surprised today to see that this recent #1 hit was actually released as a commercial CD single here in America. I got mine at Toys R Us today, but I don't think it was a Toys R Us exclusive. This is the first really popular domestic CD single I can think of that's been released in the US since Lady Gaga's "Born this Way."

It's a two-track single, both tracks lossless (thankfully), with the "B-side" being a dance version of "Both Sides Now."

1. Call Me Maybe (actual 3:13)
2. Both Sides Now (actual 3:52)

There are still a handful of commercial CD singles released in the US. In addition to the Jepsen single, here are some other recent ones:

We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together - Taylor Swift
Payphone - Maroon 5
Take A Little Ride - Jason Aldean
Glad You Came - Wanted
Truck Yeah - Tim McGraw
Boyfriend - Justin Bieber

Most of these are Wal-Mart exclusives. I have it on good authority that Wal-Mart is requesting that the labels make even more of these available, so I expect to see more of these in the future.

Hmm, interesting, Paul. "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" has apparently been pulled now, because it's no longer on Walmart's website (or Amazon's, where I read it was also offered). But I did find the others on Walmart.com, except for Payphone, which is readily available on Ebay for not much money. I also didn't know there was a Phil Phllips EP out.

I just bought the Swift and McGraw singles at the local Wal-Mart the other day. I saw an exclusive Green Day "Oh Love" EP there too.

I hope you'll post of any new domestic CD singles you hear about. Maybe I should start a thread on the topic of "current CD singles"?

Brian, it might not be a bad idea to start a new thread. I'll gladly post of any new CD singles that I hear about.

Picked up most of the ones you listed above last night, Paul. The good news is they're ALL lossless! I'll post my findings on them in a new thread on the topic of current CD singles late tonight.

Though it was QUITE the ordeal to find them, because neither I nor most of the employees knew they were in the "$5 or less" bin. Yes, Walmart, that's a great place to put the current #1 hit single -- in a gigantic bin, haphazardly buried among a couple thousand other budget CDs. I'm sure you'll sell a lot of them.

After not finding any of these singles on the shelves at the Duarte Walmart, I went to the 24-hour Glendora Walmart at about 9:30 p.m., dug through that bin for about 45 minutes, and came out with most of what I wanted, except for the Taylor Swift. Which was irritating, because the store inventory said they had 12 copies in stock, and no one knew where they were. The very helpful employees (really, that's not sarcasm) looked everywhere, including the stock room, and found nothing.

So I returned to the Duarte Walmart on my way back home. I hadn't known the singles would be in the $5 bin when I'd been there earlier. (The employees at that particular Walmart don't know a damn thing, not to mention that half of them look like they just got out of a halfway house.) Well, guess what was sitting right on top of the bin -- a Taylor Swift "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." So I got that and the Phillip Phillips EP.

Brian, glad you were able to find them all! Luckily, all of my local Wal-Mart stores are pretty good about putting the new singles on the end-cap display. Although, I sometimes do have to hunt a little harder for them:) Looking forward to the new thread and I hope to help keep it updated as best I can.

Me too. I think it would be great if we could collectively put together a comprehensive list of Top 40 songs that have been made available on a commercial CD single release since 2000.

I think that's a good idea. There there were still lots in 2000, so the list for that year is going to be quite large.

I'm going to make one more trip to Walmart today (I didn't really have a chance to go through that bin at the Duarte store) to see if I can find "Truck Yeah" and "Boyfriend," and then start the thread tonight, "CD Singles Since 2000," or maybe "CD Singles in the 21st Century," ha ha. Though those are available still on their website.
