does anyone have the def leppard 45 "hysteria" that truely runs 5:49.....there seems to be many different 45's issued with this song......the 45 i have states on the 45's face that the run time is 5:49 and is the "lp version" but in the vinyl's inner groove it says "edit-sp" and really runs 3:47 in length........does anyone have the mercury 870004 45 that truely runs 5:49???

Just this week, I tried editing the album version down to something shorter for radio. I was working based on what I remember hearing on the radio (back in 1988!), but aside from the drum break in the middle, I don't recall where or what the edits were. I was content to get it down to 4.45, but 3.47's even better.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?   Does it fade on the chorus, or does it go back to the instrumental vamp (like the intro) and fade there?

Thanks - Eric

If you're trying to re-create the 3:47 Edit from the LP Version, you'll need to make your first cut from 2:59 to 4:24, with the edit coming right before the word "miracle" in both places. Then with what you have left, chop off everything from 3:47 to the end. Make your fade out from 3:35 to 3:47.

By the way, if this is not correct, please post the correct info, as I'm only going off of a copy from the TM Century Gold Disc library, and they are only correct about 95% of the time. (They often times edited longer versions to match the 45, and for some reason they weren't always accurate.)

Holy cripe! My 45 (Mercury 870 004-7) lists the 5:49 time and the
LP version reference, but times out at 4:47. The writing on the inner
ring is 870-004 7-2-59183 SP. although the last two digits could be
5P.

I've long been confused and unclear about the number of different commercial 45 pressings that exist for Def Leppard's "Hysteria". In an effort to help keep everything straight, I will attempt to sum up the overall consensus based on all the information posted about the topic on this entire message board so far...

There are apparently two different commercial 45 pressings of "Hysteria". One runs (3:47), which I believe is an edit of the LP version; the other runs (4:47), and is said to be an early fade of the LP length. From what I can tell, all commercial copies of the 45 incorrectly state a time of (5:49) and erroneously claim to be the LP version on the record label. I have yet to see any evidence of a 45 copy actually running 5:49, nor have I seen a 45 resembling the 3:02 run time Joel Whitburn lists in Top Pop Singles. Though this doesn't mean such pressings absolutely don't exist, by the same token I have yet run across anyone who owns a commercial 45 that actually runs 5:49 or 3:02.

Whew, I think I'm finally starting to "get it"! I encourage anyone to please jump in if I'm off base with any of this, or if you have anything else you'd like to add.

For what it's worth, TM Century got this one slightly wrong. The edit is actually in the same place mentioned above but it's before the word "it's" instead of "miracle," which changes the way the drums sound in that segment of the song. Also, the fade starts at (3:31) and goes to (3:47).

Thanks to Jim for providing the info on the actual 45!

Pulling up this thread again......

Based on the above, shouldn't every appearance on CD be noted as LP version?

the long 45 version?

Bumping this up as B Side of this “Ride Into The Sun”, runs 3:02, which may
be the reason for the confusion.

The 5-CD/2-DVD European and Japanese editions of the 2017 Hysteria Super Deluxe box set comes with 2 discs of B-sides and remixes, including 6 single/radio versions. One of them is "Hysteria (Radio Edit)", which matches the description of the 3:47 version above, but runs 3:48.
