It appears there are two different versions of Jody Watley's "Don't You Want Me" on the commercial vinyl 45. The A-side features the 4:10 version, while the B-side contains the "long version" running 4:17. To date, it looks like most domestic CD releases feature the 4:10 edit, while the 4:17 version has yet to appear on disc.

Hi Todd!
I'm a huge fan of the remixes done for that song, and you are right, the only other format where I have seen the 4:17 version is on the commercial 12". They have labeled it "Radio Edit" though. I have never listened to the version on the promo 7", but I assume it's the same one. Maybe if you have that 7" you can confirm? The 4:17 on the 12" starts with Jody singing almost acapella "please don't tease me", the instrumentation of "Looking For A New Love" starts and is then mixed with the one for "Don' You Want Me". The remainder of the song is exactly the same as the 4:10 released on CD on her Greatest Hits compilation. |

Sorry Todd, just gave the record a quick listen, and what Jody sings in the beginning of the edit is "are you looking for a new love" and only after the "Looking.." beat comes in she goes "please don't tease me".

So this version is definitely not on CD as far as we know? Someone just asked me if I've ever seen the "don't you want me intro" version on CD.

Does anybody remember if the 4:11 "A-side" remix of the 4:17 "B-side" edit of the 12" club mix was the version played most commonly across the United States?
I've listened to her remix album for so many years that I've forgotten what the big top-40s in America programmed. Edited by NightAire |

Trying to identify one particular version on the song, and I didn't see any designation in my 1996 copy of Pat's book.
I have the Canadian 45 (MCA 53162, released 1987), but I'm pretty sure it's the same as the US 45. A-side - printed 4:10, actual 4:10, 111.7 BPM, "Remix and additional production by Francois Kevorkian and Michael Hutchinson", starts with a sliding synth-bass note into a snare, then a downbeat B-side - printed 4:17, actual 4:18, 111.6 BPM, "Remixed by Timmy Regisford", starts with the line "Are you looking for a new love?", then 4 beats of the "Looking For A New Love" beat, then 16 beats under the line "please don't tease me, wo-o-o-o", then at 0:17 it matches up with the 0:09 point of the A-side and stays matched up for the rest of the song. Very catchy intro pasted onto an existing mix, much like the "Local Mix" of the Breakfast Club's "Right On Track". The A-side of the 45 matches the version on the 4-CD promo set MCA Hits Sampler Vol. 2 (MCA CD33-17605, 1988, 111.9 BPM). Still don't know if the B-side turns up on CD anywhere. So... I have a different mix running 4:11 and 112.0 BPM on Rock On 1987 and on 20th Century Masters Millennium Collection best-of. This mix is much more empty-sounding than the 45. Is this the LP mix? Is this also on the Jody Watley CD? Edited by crapfromthepast |

Anyone know the origin of the 5:35 version from "World Of Dance: The 80's" CD? I can't find any version that time's out to that on Discogs.

The fade-in of freestyle beats at the intro suggests it exists with a longer intro somewhere. It has the same elements as Kevorkian's untitled extended mix and Dub Version on the US 12", but it's not constructed from either of those; it's a unique remix.
I, too, was unable to find any other releases it could be from. Apparently it's exclusive to that CD. |

The World of Dance: The 80's version is adapted from Jody Watley's dance remix album (1989), You Wanna Dance With Me?, which is one of those continuous DJ mix-style compilations that were becoming
popular at the time (think Madonna's You Can Dance). The World of Dance version begins earlier than the actual Jody remix album version, with a fade-in of the end of the previous track, and if I recall correctly, it may extend a hair past the point where the remix album version "ends" (according to the CD index) before a quick fade. But the World of Dance version is essentially just a 5:35 chunk taken out of the parent remix album and adjusted with a fade in and out for standalone play. Edited by EternalStatic |
