I owned this 45 back when and recall it was credited
only to Dottie West despite Kenny Rogers' obvious
contribution to the song. Yet, Kenny (or his record
label!) has often included this song in his multiple
compilations as one of his #1 country singles.
The Record Research books also credit this song to both
West and Rogers.

Was this song ever officially credited to Kenny Rogers
on any pressings of the 45 or Dottie's "Wild West"
album?

It doesn't appear so. I just looked at all the
configurations of the single and album on Discogs and
didn't see any mention of Kenny's name anywhere.

Over at 45cat, there is mention of Kenny on a picture
sleeve of the 45 from the Netherlands.

"Thanks To Kenny Rogers for his magic touch on "What Are
We Doin' In Love" ...

Nope. No "official" U.S. credits to Kenny Rogers at the
time the song was a hit.

Thanks everyone for confirming what I remembered from
that 45. Why is Rogers then credited in all the Record
Research books for this?

I would guess it's because his vocals are so prominent and integral to the song that they made the decision to label it that way. Maybe it's just one of those rare exceptions to the rule, like how they put Elton John's "Candle In The Wind 1997" as the A-Side of the single in their books, when in all technicality it was the B-Side and only listed on the chart as an A-Side for the first three weeks. It was obvious it sold as much as it did for "Candle 1997", just like it's obvious that Kenny contributed to the success of the song with Dottie West. That's only a guess, though.
