First off, my commercial 45, which is mono, spells his first name "Fredrick", not "Frederick." This 45 has a listed time of (3:11), and an actual time of (3:09). I post this info because the 12 current database CDs for this song all have a listed time between (3:13) and (3:20).

That is interesting information Jim regarding the spelling of Fredrick. Does anyone have a copy of this song with the spelling Frederick?

Just bumping up this thread because the actual 45 run time Jim reported should probably be included in the database. After all, CD times all run at least :04 longer, which leads me to think this may be reflective of a longer LP length. So does anyone have a copy of Frederick Knight's 1973 vinyl LP I've Been Lonely Too Long who can pass along the title track's run time?

All CD's in the database should be labeled LP version. There is an out of sequence edit on the 45.
To recreate the 45: Keep 0:00 - 2:24.1 Remove from 2:24.1 - 2:46.5 Copy the portion of the song from 40.9 - 53.4 Paste that portion at 2:24.1 The resulting file runs 3:09. |

When recreating this song, I used digital files from a 1973 release, I've Been Lonely So Long, which sonically seemed to match the 45 dub I was provided. I also used a file from the Stack 50th Anniversary Celebration. The reason being, the first file only runs 3:15, thus necessitating use of a second digital file.
The observation I then had was where some instrumentation was centered on the I've Been Lonely So Long source in the opening 5 seconds of the song, it was in the left channel on the Stax source at the same point. Wonder if we're dealing with different takes on some CD's? Not sure... Edited by eriejwg |

As I suspected, there is added instrumentation on many of the listed LP versions in the database that is not present on the 45. Unless there were multiple pressings of the 45.
You could recreate the 45 from the 1973 I've Been Lonely So Long release, with the edit points listed above, but it comes up short at about 3:04. Edited by eriejwg |

I do, acquired new while it was a hit. The matrix number in the dead wax is SM-00846. There's also delta #87400 and L-NIX MR (MR is in a circle), and I'm fairly certain this is a Monarch pressing. GM |

I'm a little confused for this track.
The 45 is mono, running 3:09 or 3:10. The mix has lots of tinkly chimes at the beginning, very prominent right from the first beat of the song. I have a stereo version on Rhino's Didn't It Blow Your Mind Vol. 8 (1991), running 3:18. This mix has a fairly hard-panned intro, with no tinkly chimes for the first two or three beats of the song. The tinkly chimes come in after that, but they're not as prominent as on the 45. The vocals, including the background vocals, are all clustered in the center of the soundstage. The same analog transfer is used for Time-Life's Solid Gold Soul Vol. 7 1972 (1996), but the absolute polarity is inverted (doesn't affect sound quality at all). I have a different stereo version on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies Vol. 25 Seventies Generation (1992), running 3:13. The panning on the intro is narrowed, the tinkly chimes show up right from the first beat (like the 45). The background vocals here are panned, with one vocal line in the left channel, and one in the right. My ears aren't good enough to tell, but could the 45 be a fold-down of this mix? The true 45 has different edits at the end of the song, but the mixes aren't too far off if you fold down the Time-Life version. Which one of these is the true LP mix? |
