Many years ago, I got a call from Irene Cara's manager.
She said that we had an incorrect birth year listed for
Irene in our Top Pop Singles book. I told her that the
sources we had (including 1980s promotional material from
Irene's own promo team) indicated that 1959 was correct.
A few days later I got a call from Irene herself,
DEMANDING that we change the date. I told her that I
appreciated the call, and if she could send me some
documentation, I would gladly change it. She then
literally started screaming at me, saying some choice
words, and then furiously hung up the phone. We never got
any documentation and never heard another word from her
again. Even her Wikipedia page has a note about the
disputed birthdate. Even after that experience, I still
enjoy her music and remain a fan of her in general.

Wow, thanks for sharing that fascinating personal anecdote with us, Paul! All I can say is that you're a better man than I am for remaining gracious and complimentary of Irene Cara after receiving such unnecessary rude and belligerent treatment from her. Yet, from another standpoint, how cool is it to know that many of the musicians who appear in Joel Whitburn's reference books are probably fans of your work!

I had the privilege of talking directly to a few artists
over the years. Meco Monardo, Narvel Felts and Joe
Dowell, all gave me some great bio info. Kenny Loggins
called to order a book for his son. Reps for Elton John,
Michael Jackson, Casey Kasem and Dick Clark would
regularly call to order. Sir Tim Rice would call himself
to order just about every book. I got to be friends with
FOJ (friends of Joel) such as Duane Eddy and Mike Curb.
It was a particular thrill for me to correspond with Paul
Grein and Fred Bronson as I was a huge Chart Beat fan.

All in all, Irene was the only one that ever had an issue
with us. But as I said, I'm still a fan.
