The song "Ain't Nobody" by Rufus featuring Chaka Khan is listed in the database as being the 45 version on the Billboard Hot R&B Hits 1983 CD (Rhino 72138). I compared it to the vinyl 45 and it turns out that the song's intro on the 45 is approximately :02 longer than on the Billboard CD. This is because the song's intro on the CD begins fading in at the equivalent of the :02 point on the vinyl 45. I checked other CDs and they all have the shortened intro except on my ultra rare Breakin' soundtrack CD (Mercury 821919), which features the LP version. This CD contains the complete intro though it is rather hissy. I'm guessing the song's later fade-in on most CDs was designed to help lessen some of the excess hiss. At any rate, I used my digital editing software to splice the fully intact intro from the Breakin' disc onto the rest of the song from the Billboard CD to come up with the complete 45 version.

I just recorded a trace of the introduction from my promo 45 and the cd Billboard Top R&B Hits of 1983 and I come up with only a .6 second visual difference between the two which is almost impossible (for my ears anyway) to detect since the introduction fades in.

The vinyl 45 mp3 that Ed e-mailed me is about a 1.85 second difference. Perhaps the song was designed to fade in quicker on the DJ 45 to prevent the feel of "dead air" due to low audio levels. Again, if you want to hear the commercial 45 intro length, it is exactly the same as the intro on the O.S.T. Breakin' CD. It may or may not be a significant enough different to warrant mention in the database.

Pat:

Regarding "Ain't Nobody"... When conducting an artist search for Rufus, the comment for the song presently (and correctly) reads:

(the actual 45 running time is (4:00) not (4:05) as stated on the record label)

But when performing an artist search for Chaka Khan, there is no above comment regarding the 45 run time info for "Ain't Nobody". Just thought I'd make you aware of this so the database can be updated accordingly.

bringing this forward. I agree the shortened intro can not be considered the
true (commercial) 45 version, since it is missing part of the beginning.
Perhaps back in 2006, we were not as "picky" (and yes we have the 3-second
rule, but that generally applies to fades, not beginnings), but I believe we
now are (so database would need updating).

At some point, I downloaded a digital 45 of this song from
iTunes or Rhapsody. My file runs 4:02. Could my file run 2
seconds too slow?

Attn: Pat. I just noticed there are 19 CDs listed for this song in the on-line database under Chaka Khan, but only 17 are shown when you look under Rufus. It seems these two are the ones missing under the latter:

(S)      (4:21)      Warner Brothers 25946 Life Is A Dance - The Remix Project (remixed)
(S)      (3:59)      Time-Life R810-08 Rhythm + Grooves: And The Beat Goes On (45 version but with a :02 shorter introduction)

So what else is different on the 45-rpm version? I have the "Breakin'" LP so that's what I'm comparing to.
Cheers,
