I have "You Really Got Me" on U.S. CD in both "dry" and heavily reverbed versions. This has made me wonder which version appeared on the original U.S. 45 and LP, since I don't have either of these to compare my CDs to.

Tim: To me, the Shel Talmy-produced Kinks sides are so consistently distorted and lo-fi, that it's much harder than usual to distinguish/answer your "dry/wet" question. Just pulled and played my 45; however, I'm leaning towards it sounding like the "dry" version. If you'd like me to shoot you out a 45 dub of my "only VG+ condition-sorry" 1964 45, for clarification purposes, feel free to PM me.

Tim, there has not been a lot of response to your question so if you want to point out a specific cd that you think are "reverbed" and another cd that you think is "dry", I can try to make the comparison to the 45 or LP for you to help you out.

Hi Pat,
Thanks for replying. The "reverbed" version appears on Rhino R2 75772 "Son Of Frat Rock" and the "dry" version appears on JCI JCD-3125 "1960 - Only Rock 'N Roll - 1964". |

Here is what I can come up with at the moment Tim. I have the original 45 and it is dry. I have the stereo (although it is not really stereo) LP "You Really Got Me" and it is the wet version. Now we need further clarification from anyone that has the mono "You Really Got Me" LP version.

Tim, I finally obtained a mono vinyl LP and can now report that the 45 and mono LP version of "You Really Got Me" are the dry version while the stereo vinyl LP contains the wet version. I have updated the database for all cd appearances with the appropriate comment.

Yes, much appreciated, Pat. Also, you will want to change the (M) to (S) for those CDs that you updated with "stereo LP version." Currently, all CDs show (M) next to the listing.

No, "You Really Got Me" has never appeared in stereo either on vinyl or cd. The original "stereo" vinyl LP did not include this song in stereo (it was slightly electronic).

As Pat states above, the 'Stereo' LP is not really stereo. The early Kinks hits have never been released in true stereo. It was producer Shel Talmy's practice to mix tapes down to mono, deliver only those tapes to the record company, and take the original session tapes home with him.
