   Hi All -

I'm new to the site and have been amazed to see to collective knowledge of everyone on this board.

Anyway, in digging through the database I noticed that there is no distinction between "When You Close Your Eyes" from the "Midnight Madness" LP and the "Greatest Hits" (MCA 42307).  However, they are completely different vocal takes.  I have M.M. and used to own "Hits."  In fact, you can hear the difference just from listening to the audio clips on allmusic.com.

Does anyone know what version was used on the 45?  I have to assume it was the M.M. version because that is what I remember hearing on the radio when it was first released.

	Welcome to the board, 995wlol. I just listened to the song samples on allmusic.com, and you're right. Great catch! Unfortunately, I can't be much help on this one since I only have the cassette tape of "Greatest Hits." I'm sure someone can help sort it out, though.

	Sorry I can't be of direct help, but the version on the CD 20th Century Masters-The Millennium Collection (MCA 088 112 307-2) is the same vocal take as the 45, and the CD claims their version is from Midnight Madness.

	Paul: There was a 4-CD MCA hit sampler sent to my radio station, back in 1989. Lucky for me, our then-afternoon-guy/MD left the station, to go work for MCA as a promotion man that same year. He soon after mailed me my own copy of it, as a Christmas present for all the help I'd been to him! To date, it has proven to be a very reliable source of MCA 80s hit 45 versions on CD. Last night, I shot out all the necessary audio to Aaron, who will compare the 45/CD audio and will soon report back with his findings. Once we get this initial comparison straight, I hope to also check some database CDs, to confirm 995wlol's claims. Edited by jimct

	Jim sent me a dub of his 45 to compare, and the 45 vocal matches the LP vocal. The version on Greatest Hits, as 995wlol states above, is an alternate take.

	Wow, thanks everybody--I had a feeling you guys would get to the bottom of this! Just a couple of other notes. It seems that the "alternate take" version has gotten a foothold on radio because I have heard it on the syndicated "Backtracks USA" 80s radio show as well as a now-defunct 80s station here in the Twin Cities. I have a handful of other obsevations/questions about single versions that I'm looking forward to discussing with all of you. Thanks again, Mike

	We're here to help, Mike. I'm sure we all appreciate you bringing up these differences we hadn't discovered. And most likely the reason that Backtrax and other stations are playing the "alternate" version is because they hadn't noticed the difference either.

	I synched up the 'Midnight Madness' & the 'Greatest Hits' versions. No differences. No phasing errors. Please descibe any differences I have missed. Thank you. Andy

	If what you say is true, Andrew, then there may be more than one pressing of Greatest Hits. You might want to take a listen to them seperately, because it's highly possible they used the same music track but with an alternate take on the vocals. If you listen to the second verse, for example, you can hear a slight difference on the line "been an awful hard night of drinking." He almost sounds off-key on the Greatest Hits version, especially noticeable on the word "drinking."
