Hello Everyone. Thanks for all the work you do on your book Pat. I find it very useful. I have several additions/corrections to make. I'll mention two now and post the rest in coming days.

1) DAN HARTMAN
I have a CD by Dan Hartman that you do not mention in your book. The CD is called Keep The Fire Burnin' (Chaos/Columbia OK 53222) and it was released in the U.S. in 1994. Although it is not apparant from the title (which may be why it's not in your book), this is, in fact, a greatest hits CD. It contains the following original chart hits:

Instant Replay (S) 5:19-LP version
I Can Dream About You (S) 5:58-remix
We Are The Young (S) 4:16-LP version

2) ABC - WHEN SMOKEY SINGS
There is no mention of the 45 and LP versions of When Smokey Sings by ABC in your book. The 45 has a different bridge than the LP. On the LP, at about 2:50 into the song, the singer mentions Luther(Vandross) and James(Brown) among others. On the 45, at the same point in the song, he sings "I need you so bad" and there is a sax solo. I have three CD's by ABC that have this song on it (Alphabet City, Absolutely, and Best of: 20th Century Masters), and they all have the LP version. I really want to know if the 45 version of this song is available on CD. Perhaps you can check the other CD's listed in your book to see if they have the 45 version. Also, you don't mention in your book that the version on Absolutely has a countoff, while the version on Alphabet City has a countoff at the end of the previous track, and the version on Best of: 20th Century Masters has no countoff.

singleman:

I happen to have a German import CD single from 1987 of ABC's "When Smokey Sings", which contains the saxaphone bridge that you describe. I also used to have this sax version on a TM Century radio promo CD, and therefore was under the impression that this was just a DJ edit. However, since I never owned or listened to the vinyl 45, it could very well be that this sax solo was also present on the official single release. I'd be interested to see if anyone else has any thoughts or observations on this.

I have the vinyl commercial 45 and there is a sax bridge on there. Thanks for the tip on ABC and I can report that I have listened to all cd's listed in my book that contain "When Smokey Sings" and they are all the LP version.

so everyone knows.........the 45 version itself has martin fry saying, "1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4" before the music starts which is NOT included on the uk import cd single....many of the compilation cds have the spoken intro on them BUT don't include the correct 45 sax bridge.......what we need to do is to merge the intro from the greatest hits cd into the uk cd single version to come up with the TRUE 45 version

My friend once made a copy of "When Smokey Sings" for me from his TM Century promo CD. It is the 45 version but missing the countoff at the beginning, which exactly matches Ed's description of the U.K. single. Does anyone have a DJ 45 copy who can verify if it contains the countoff at the beginning?

Rehashing this old post a bit for a clarification. Another Lost Decade: The '80s: Hard To Find Hits Time-Life M19133 lists "When Smokey Sing" in the DB as 45 version, while a couple T/L cd's below it states 45 W/:03 countoff. My before mentioned "Lost Decade" cd also has a :03 countoff, so were there 2 45's or is the DB in error?

Yes, the countoff is included on the stereo/stereo DJ 45. Both sides are identical.
