attn all.......i just bought the 2 in 1 cd by night titled "night/long distance" issued in 2004 on renaissance records.........even though the cd itself is silver giving one the illusion that it is a factory made cd, it clearly is just a copy of a record/lp.....lots a pops and tics for it to be from the original source tape.........no hissing or humming, just a lot of low level scratches........be warry when thinking of buying this cd.......

here is the reply i rec'd back from the seller regarding this cd being copied from vinyl....
Actually it came from master tapes supplied by lead singer Chris Thompson. The Digital Masters were burned in a fire at Planet Records many years ago. This is the only source that now exists. John |

John's statement doesn't make any sense -- there are no digital master tapes yet the "master tapes" (supplied by lead singer Chris Thompson) were used for this release. What -- the analog master tapes? Would this seller be the John who was the president of Renaissance Records? He sells a lot of Renaissance product, and I've found many of the later releases came straight from vinyl. (I, too, bought through ebay.) But when I asked him about it, he swore the master tapes were used. Clearly, they weren't, and the CDs came from vinyl!

I bought an import a fews years ago that is titled Chris Thompson Backtrack 1980-1994. It features "If You Remember Me" and "Hot Summer Night" in great quality. I remember being so excited the day it arrived in the mail because Hot Summer Night was one of my favorite all time songs.

Hi All,
I'd also be dubious about the statements made about licensing in this case. "digital masters" being destroyed makes little sense since that material was recorded analog and mixed down to analog masters. I'm sure digital copies can be mastered from those tapes which I'm sure are safe and sound on a BMG vault. Perhaps EdisonLite can comment, because if I recall, he helped with licensing to get "If You Remember Me" on the Varese CD "Barry Scott presents The Lost 45's" vol 2. It is certainly from a master tape on there. It was licensed from BMG special products. I do recall him saying something about Chris Thompson involved, not sure. And side note, I've seen this many times - when a record was distributed by a major label, even if that label later loses the rights to the music, you can bet the tapes they issued stay right were they were stored. Those Planet singles were issued by RCA so it made perfect sense to look to BMG for tapes. I also have "Hot Summer Nights" from an import cd and that too is from a master tape. -MM |

Yes, the Chris Thompson recording of "If You Remember Me" (and therefore, I assume, the whole Night album from which it came) is owned by BMG; Richard Perry used to own these tapes but then they reverted back to BMG at some point. And the master tapes are in the BMG vaults. The Renaissance label (mentioned in the first post) usually uses vinyl sources for their CDs.
