Pat, I thank you for listing the Rhino Handmade "Very Dionne" in the database; Because you did, I am going to order "Very Dionne", for the hit live version of "Make It Easy On Yourself." While I had their website up, I also read the description of her other RH offering, a "2 LP on 1 CD" of her slightly earlier work. Normally I wouldn't give much credibility to a label's own revues of their CDs, but Rhino Handmade seems to be pretty sharp as to exact details. They did specifically emphasize that the "single version" of "(Theme From) Valley Of The Dolls" is featured on the 2-for-1 CD. In the database, I notice no specific version notation for the song, and you do already include that exact CD in the database. I'd be happy to shoot you out an mp3 dub of my 45, to compare against the CD, if you need it. I really don't like the song at all, and I'd rather not buy it, just for the one song, and then find out it was bad info from Rhino. Any light you can shed on this situation would be appreciated, as always, Pat.

Jim I assume you are referring to the cd "Windows Of The World/Valley Of The Dolls". I listened to the version of Valley Of The Dolls on this cd and compared it to the version on Rhino's "Anthology" and noticed no difference. I do not have the 45 of "Valley Of The Dolls" so if you could, go ahead and send me an mp3 so I can try to verify the differences between the 45 and LP version.

I should mention that the liner notes to "Windows Of The World/Valley Of The Dolls" do mention a difference between the 45 and soundtrack version of Valley Of The Dolls. They also state "And while this new cd compilation could possibly have included the original soundtrack version, the legal aspects of obtaining permission from 20th Century Fox might have held up its release for a long time". So it sounds to me like the version that is hard to find on cd is the soundtrack version.

Terrific insight, Pat. I very much appreciate you clarifying the situation for this song.

Here is some interesting information that I just acquired. I did some research into the vinyl soundtrack to Valley Of The Dolls on 20th Century Fox and discovered that Dionne Warwick does not appear on the vinyl soundtrack so now I am confused by the statements made in the liner notes to the cd twofer of "Windows Of The World/Valley Of The Dolls".

Pat, my intentions are to shoot you out an mp3 dub of my 45 by Sunday or Monday. Excellent job in determining that Dionne Warwick didn't even appear on the vinyl soundtrack. Amazing - and it sure throws a monkey wrench into trying to get to the bottom of this one! That's why you've got the five stars, Pat, and we only have three! (Although I want to nominate Aaron K, Todd Ireland, EdTop40 and Brian W. for a 4th star, as Top 40 Hits On CD Chat Board "Respected Senior Researchers"!!!)

Can I get half a star for just being a fan? :)

I have obtained the 45 of Valley Of The Dolls and compared it to the vinyl LP version found on Dionne Warwick's "Valley Of The Dolls" album and I do not hear any differences. If anyone does notice a difference please let me know.

my commercial 45 for the dionne warwick song '(theme from)
the valley of the dolls" issued as the A side scepter 12203
lists the run time on the label as 3:35 but actually runs
3:36.....i point this out as the db has a wide range of run
times listed as 3:30- 3:36....

I have just acquired a promo 45 for this double-sided Top 5 BB hit.
Confirmed as Scepter 12203, to my surprise, it both states on the label
and is stereo. Listed time is (3:35), actual time is (3:34), with handwritten
deadwax ino of "SCS-12203B-", followed by "S60966".

Since there is already an existing thread for the hit flip side, "I Say A Little
Prayer" (also in stereo), I will post its promo 45 details over there.

Back now to "Valley Of The Dolls". By several years, this is the earliest
Scepter stereo 45 that I own/have ever seen, be it stock or promo.

I think Pat's earlier research, as to the song not appearing on the original
20th Century Fox Motion Picture soundtrack LP, may provide a key clue as
to why the song appears in stereo on my promo 45. With no parent album
including a stereo version of the song, I wonder if the label was perhaps
"looking for a home" to issue the song in stereo, given the LP void, and
ultimately found one, opting to include it in stereo on the promo 45. I'm
just guessing, though.

But with the stock 45 being mono on both sides, I now wonder whether or
not a mono promo Scepter 12203 45 was ever pressed up/sent to radio in
late '67/early '68. I just checked, but see no promo 45 scans for it on
either Discogs, 45cat or Google Images. If anyone either owns a promo
45 copy, label scan, or happens to know more about this situation, please
feel free to chime in.
