My commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:52), but an actual time of (3:48).

Does anyone know if the 3:03 DJ edit can be recreated?

John, DJ 45, which actually runs 3:02, can easily be created. Starting with the 3:49 version on Rhino's "In Yo Face" compilation, you'll need to chop off the first 0:35.9 seconds, so that your edit starts with the horn blasts after "gimme the bridge, now."
Next, chop off 3:06.7 to the end (right after "let me hear y'all..."). This is right in the middle of the fade out. Create a fade out over the last 6 seconds of your edit, and perform the fade from 100% to 0% two times. Finally, pitch up the entire file by 2.5%. Your end result should be just a little over 3:02. |

I just acquired a U.S. CD featuring this funk/go-go classic, which I noticed wasn't included in the 10th edition of Pat's book from 2004, despite the fact it came out all the way back in 1998. And since this top 40 hit has been somewhat elusive on CD over the years, I thought it would be worth mentioning. (But in the event Pat's since added it to the on-line database, please disregard.) It's Chuck Brown's own 11-track compilation, titled Greatest Hits: Back It On Up, on Raw Venture 007. (The full catalog no. for the CD - including the prefix & suffix - is actually "VPA007-2".) It contains the LP version (a.k.a. "Parts 1 & 2", as Pat calls it), w/ an actual time of (7:37). Definitely the original recording. Unfortunately, this CD is long out-of-print, but here's the page for it on Amazon: Greatest Hits: Back It On Up
And although I don't yet have it (but it's on my wish-list), I'll point out that Raw Venture also released a 2-CD set titled The Best of Chuck Brown in 2005, which again, includes "Bustin' Loose" - so that one belongs in the on-line database as well. Page for it on Amazon (and apparently, it's still in print!): The Best of... |
