My commercial 45 has both a listed and actual time of (3:28). The only obvious dropout on my 45, which I remember also hearing on the radio back in 1977, was at the (1:35) mark, which I always just wrote off to a horrific splice during the editing process. But I do certainly trust Pat's excellent "audio ears" for noting other dropout points as well. I only mention this timing because current database CDs which state "45 version" run between (3:29) and (3:33). Perhaps my 45 was sped up, vs. some of the CD appearances, so the "Star Wars And Other Galactic Funk" CD, which features both a (3:29) "45 version", as well as the promo 12" version, appears to be the one to own for the "correct 45 run time on CD fanatics" among us.

Your ears do not deceive you, Jim. When listening in mono on AM radio, probably the only obvious dropout is at 1:35. The other two dropouts are quicker and aren't too noticeable in mono. They are very obvious when listening in stereo on a set of headphones.

For the record, those dropouts are also present on the original vinyl 45. Also, CD versions that run closer to 3:33 are slightly slower and have about a second longer fade out than the 45.

I once had a Canadian comp where the song was perfect all the way through. There was no indication that it was a remix, although it is possible.

I also had a Canadian CD that was almost perfect! It was
a Unidisc cd single for it. But, they got one edit wrong
in trying to re-create it.
Once you know how to construct it, it's fairly easy to
re-create it from the LP version without any drop-outs.

I always thought it was an inspired edit to create that
45. The "best-of" liner notes don't say who did it, but
that the task was given to a "young engineer".
I picture the poor guy up to his ears in spliced tape. I
guess we can't blame him for a couple of those splices
being a bit rough.

It seems all single versions have dropouts. However, there are some listings like:

Casablanca 314553255 Best Of (45 version with LP introduction)

which apparently has no dropouts and is simply 11 seconds longer. Based on the description, does that mean if I eliminate the 1st 11 seconds, I will have the single version without dropouts?

I thought the Eric Records disc fixed the dropouts or did
they keep them in the edit on Hard To Find Pop
Instrumentals
? Looks like they kept two of the
dropouts as well (guess
if the 45 had the dropouts they decided to keep them in as
well).
