The actual commercial 45 run time for Stevie Wonder's "I Ain't Gonna Stand for It" is 4:36, not 4:39 as stated on the record label. (The timing information comes courtesy of abagon.)

I noticed that "I Ain't Gonna Stand For It" on the box set "At The Close Of A Century" has Stevie shouting "No-oh" several times from about 4:19 to the fade-out, sounding like an overdub. My commercial 45 (Tamla 54320) does not have this. I don't have any of the other cd's listed in the database which contain this song, so I don't know if this overdub is on the album or is special to this box set.

Also, I'm getting a time of 4:40 on my 45 [Deadwax info T54320(A)66204 - 15BYI#14 PRECISION].

Jon, you are correct, the overdub you mention is found on the LP version ("Hotter Than July") and not on the 45. Fortunately the 45 version does appear on cd on "Motown Year By Year 1980".

The database currently notes that the 45 run time is 4:36 (as reported by abagon and Todd), but my 45 copy seems to be closer to what Jono reported in 2009. It has a listed and actual time of 4:39.

The Motown Year By Year 1980 CD fades about 4.5 seconds sooner than my stock 45.

Getting technical for a few moments here...

I don't believe there are any overdubs on the 45 version.

I simply believe the 45 version and the LP version are
different edits of a longer full-take that was never
released {either commercially or promotionally).

Of course there is no way for me to prove this...

Can anyone refute or corroborate?

Andy

Andy, I absolutely concur. Evidence can be found with the other singles from Hotter Than July: "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me," "Happy Birthday," "Master Blaster (Jammin')" and the B-side "All I Do."

All of these songs appear in longer form on other releases with identical mixes as the LP version but have additional sections of music that were either edited out or left in for the LP and/or 45. In the case of "All I Do," the 45 has an intro that was removed for the LP. "Happy Birthday" was released in a longer version on the UK 12", and the additional music on this version was simply edited out for the LP and US 12" single version.

Yes, and I just noticed the printed lyrics in the LP
gatefold had additional lyrics that were not on the
album...
