There is a difference between the mono version and stereo version (in comparing the mono side of the DJ 45 and the stereo side) On the mono DJ 45 (and probably on the mono stock single) at around 2:33 there is guitar, while on the stereo side the guitar is completely mixed out. At 2:43 both versions feature the guitar but on the mono the guitar is then faded out while on the stereo side it is not faded out. and plays briefly longer.

There stereo side of the DJ version matches The Very Best Of Aretha - The 70's CD and I assume that's also the original LP version. I believe then that all issues on this song so far are therefore the LP version.

Jim reports the actual commercial 45 run time of Aretha Franklin's "Spanish Harlem" is 3:32. (The printed record label time is 3:30.) Currently, database CDs run from 3:26 to 3:31. I didn't ask Jim if his 45 copy is mono or stereo, but I can try to get that info from him.

In the meantime, Bill, do you have exact run time info for the mono and stereo sides of your promo 45? Based on your analysis, it sounds like you may have uncovered a possible 45/LP version difference for this song!

Todd, the 1971 commercial 45 I'd supplied you with the actual run time info for, was mono.

Bringing this one back... Can anyone confirm if their "Spanish Harlem" commercial 45 matches Bill Cahill's description of his mono DJ 45 side? If so, then all stereo CDs in the database to date should probably indicate an "LP version" comment.

The matter was left unconfirmed, Pat couldn't detect it.

my commercial 45 for the aretha franklin song "spanish
harlem issued as atlantic 2817 lists the run time as 3:30
but actually runs 3:32.....i don't hear what bill is
hearing....my commercial 45 sounds identical to the queen
of soul cd version, except the cd version fades
prematurely......bill can you be more specific as to the
times and what exactly you are hearing
differently.....because i don't hear any
differences...bill, can you also provide the run out
groove info....mine is 'A-21311-7 6-29-71' machine
stamped 'S' then 'AT/DK'.....before all of this it looks
as if there is writing backwards and using a mirror it
says '24185' backwards

Mark, it means that "Spanish Harlem" was mastered by none other than the late Professor Backwards under the alias of Dennis King! ;) My Shelley-pressed copy (label matrix designation A-21311 LY) matches Ed's description, except that the Shelley logo is........ wait for it........here it comes........ a backwards "S" in a circle!

LOL!

forgot to mention the intro the ELO classic "Fire On
High".   We were playing the album once and got curious,
so we stopped the turntable and ran it backwards to see
what he says....
The guy says "the music is reversible!"
I thought that was hilarious.
