The actual commercial 45 run time of Irene Cara's "Flashdance... What a Feeling" is 3:56. (Run time information courtesy of abagon. The stated time on the record label is 3:55.) The only reason I post this info is because the song's CD times in the database range from 3:49-3:57.

The 12" version of this contains an extra verse that's not on any other source (as far as I know).

i've been reviewing the year 1983 over the last few months and the song "flashdance....what a feeling" by irene cara runs 3:56 while all the db entries run between 3:49 and 3:54, a good 0:07 to 0:02 SHORTER than the actual 45's run time......there was one cd listed below
(S) (3:57) Columbia/Legacy 86827 Paramount Pictures'90th Anniversary Memorable Songs that seems to have the proper, longer run time, with no notes in the db, so i bought it...it turns out the version on this cd is a re-recording and NOT the original version.....this should be noted in the db.... |

Some useless trivia... as often happens, the variety of lengths is partly due to speed variations, and partly due to differences in when the fadeout ends.
Examples: • Irene Cara What a Feelin' CD = correct speed (assuming synth A4=440 Hz) • Flashdance soundtrack CD = 0.38% fast • US 45 = 0.63% fast The last lyrics heard in the song are: * (Call, call, call, call) (What a feelin') I can have it all (Bein's believin') Bein's believiiiiin'-oh! (Take your passion) (Make it happen) ** Make it happen (What a feelin') What a feeeeelin' *** (Bein's believin') **** Happen! ***** * = soundtrack CD version begins fade here ** = 45 and Irene Cara LP/CD version begins fade here *** = soundtrack CD version ends fade here **** = Irene Cara LP/CD version ends fade here ***** = 45 ends fade here The "Happen!" which only is at the very end of the 45 appears to be a non sequitur, as if Cara were responding to the chorus singing "Make it happen" instead of "Bein's believin'". I wouldn't be surprised if the reason it doesn't appear anywhere else is because it wasn't supposed to be there in the first place. For no apparent reason, the song's appearance on the 1997 Irene Cara CD reissue used the version title "Radio Edit" even though it's not unique in any way. Edited by mjb50 |

I only now realized that the version included in the
soundtrack known as the LP/45 version seems to be an edit of what used to be a longer version, probably including the second part of the verse featured on the extended version. You can clearly notice a not so perfect edit point at 0:53 which cuts the verse short. Has anybody else noticed this? It was strange to not see it discussed here on the board. Extended version structure: [Intro] First, when there's nothing, but a slow glowing dream That your fear seems to hide deep inside your mind All alone, I have cried, silent tears full of pride In a world made of steel, made of stone, made of stone [Verse 1] If I only could take all the love that you give And escape to a world crystal clear Well, I hear the music, close my eyes, feel the rhythm Wrap around, take a hold of my heart Album/45 version: [Intro] First, when there's nothing, but a slow glowing dream That your fear seems to hide deep inside your mind All alone, I have cried, silent tears full of pride In a world made of steel, made of stone, made of stone [Verse 1] Well, I hear the music, close my eyes, feel the rhythm Wrap around, take a hold of my heart |

I'm afraid to listen. Once I do, I'm sure I'll never be able to un-hear it!

Ugh. Heard it and now can't unhear it.
The edit is on all the 3:56-ish versions that I have. You can't re-edit it down from the 7:18-ish versions because the mix is slightly different and there are some ad libs over the instrumental part that you'd want to use. The version on Hear The Light Vol. 1 (1984) seems to be the longest version, with a fade that runs from about 3:49 to about 3:54. The version on the original pressings of the Flashdance soundtrack (copyright 1983) fades significantly earlier, with a fade from about 3:32 to 3:52. The version on Pure Disco 2 (1997) fades from about 3:46 to about 3:53. My go-to version is Hear The Light Vol. 1 (1984). |

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.

I've always known about that edit, but the fact that I've
heard that song literally THOUSANDS of times over the years, I guess I just got used to it. |
