My copy of Pat's book (1955-1996) shows that the (3:57) version on Time-Life's Sounds Of The Seventies - AM Nuggets is "edit of LP version".
Actually, it's just an early fade of the LP version. The fade begins on the downbeat around 3:45, just like the LP version, but it's a shorter fade. In addition, it's got the left/right channels reversed and has a little extra compression, compared to the other CD versions of the LP version. Same for the (3:57) version on Time-Life's AM Gold - 1978, which is digitally exactly 1.5 dB louder than AM Nuggets. I was hoping for some spectacular sound quality on this track, but I was pretty disappointed with everything I heard. The version on Time-Life's Body Talk - Heart And Soul is a little muffled, like it was from a high-generation tape. Time-Life's Singers And Songwriters - 1975-1979 is digitally identical to Body Talk. The version on Priority's Kickin' Back/70's Greatest Rock Hits Volume 5 is mastered too loud and clips. The version on Warner Special Products' Mystic Music Presents Good Times is missing the opening drumbeat of the song, and is EQ'd a little too trebly. Still, this version is a little more open-sounding than all of the others, and with a little surgery to restore the opening drumbeat, this became my version of choice. I don't have Worlds Away or Classics Volume 26, so I can't vouch for those. I would expect Classics to sound pretty good, based on the rest of the series. Is the 45 version an edit of the LP version? |

Yes. I do believe the fade's the same as the "LP edit", but the "all right, once you get past the pain" section at (3:21) gets removed.
If that makes any sense. :) Edited by sriv94 |

Ron, I just sent you WAV files from "Classics 26" and
"Worlds Away" CD's for your review. I too am curious to know the exact 45 edits for this one as well. MM Edited by MMathews |

Ok, here’s the editing instructions for recreating the 45 edit (this is assuming you use the "LP edit" or "early fade" version previously mentioned on the first post by Ron).
Anyway, remove from 3:20.52 to 3:37.83 from the “right” in "all right" to the second “right” in "all right" from the LP edit version. The finished file should be 3:40.62 in length with one edit at 3:20.52. If you really want it to match the true 45 speed, tweak the pitch up a bit to about 100.7% Hope this helps Edited by Back2TheFuture |

My recreation runs 3:37, which matches the time on lone
listed CD in the database with the 45 version. Does the 45 really run 3:45? |

The finished file should actually run 3:40.62 (including the ending silence) eriejwg, just as the true 45. Sorry for the confusion. I made a typo on the previous post!

Mark sent me two files, so here are my findings.
The LP version on Worlds Away (A&M 3198) sounds like a very low-generation source tape. Slightly smiley-face EQ, but no noise reduction, and a better-defined soundstage than all of the other analog transfers listed below. The same analog transfer is used on Warner Special Products' 2-CD Mystic Music Presents Good Times (1991), but that CD is missing the opening drumbeat - avoid. There's a different analog transfer on Classics Vol. 26 (1988), which sounds like a higher-generation tape source than Worlds Away. No NR, reasonable EQ, but still not as crisp and well-defined as Worlds Away. The same analog transfer is used for:
Here are instructions for creating the 45 edit. I based my edit on the mastering on Worlds Away, but the others don't differ significantly in speed. Segment 1 Extends from 0:00.0 to 3:20.3 on both the LP version and the 45 edit. Ends on a snare hit on the word "right". Remove the 36 beats from 3:20.3 to 3:37.6 of the LP version. Segment 2 Starts on snare hit on the word "right". 39 beats long Extends from 3:20.3 to 3:38.9 of the 45 edit. Extends from 3:37.6 to 3:56.2 of the LP version. Ends on a downbeat. Fade 32 beats long Starts on downbeat on the word "all" Extends from 3:23.6 to 3:38.9 of the 45 edit. Extends from 3:41.0 to 3:56.2 of the LP version. So it's one edit on a snare at 3:20.3, and an early fade. Your mixdown will run 3:38.9. (Edited to include Rhino Ventura Highway disc info.) Edited by crapfromthepast |

Any idea on the LP version on 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection as to how the quality is?
