The database states the following comment regarding Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing":

(dj copies of this cd single run (4:27), the "pop radio edit - no orchestra intro", (4:57) the "pop mix", and (4:29) not (4:48) as stated on the cd single - the "rock mix")

As a supplement to the DJ info above, I thought I'd pass along that my commercial CD single copy has an actual run time of 4:57 (printed time is 4:58).

This brings me to my next question... Does anyone know if there's a difference between the "Pop Mix" on the promo CD single and the 45/LP version?

Todd, I believe your Promo Only CD has the Pop Mix (with intro). If you have a chance, perhaps you can compare them. I don't have the 45/LP vers.

Pat's current database notes are correct, but I thought I'd provide more complete promo CD single details for it, since we received in three different, 1-track promo CD singles for it (which was unusual) back in 1998:

Aerosmith-"I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" (CSK 41241)
1-Pop Mix (listed & actual time 4:58) (FYI, this was the version we played on-air as a current)

Aerosmith-"I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" (CSK 41242)
1-Rock Mix (listed 4:58; actual 4:30) (please note the :28 second difference between the listed/actual times)(this version starts cold, with Tyler's vocal "I can't stay awake")

Aerosmith-"I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" (CSK 41306)
1-Pop Radio Edit No Orchestra (listed 4:28; actual 4:27) (there were probably 1998 radio station requests for a "Pop Edit" version that was edited the same way that the "Rock Mix" was, featuring that same, cold, Tyler vocal at the start. That's my guess as to why this third promo was issued in the first place, after the first two had been issued.)

The station I worked for only played the "Pop Radio Edit No Orchestra" version.

Pat, your new database modification for this song's "Rock Mix" states a listed time of (4:48) - this is incorrect. The correct listed time, and the one I originally indicated above, is in fact (4:58).

Aaron:

Actually, the version on my Promo Only Mainstream Radio subscription series appears to be identical to the 45/LP version, except it fades :10 sooner (run time: 4:50). It also doesn't mention anything on the track listing about this being a "pop mix"... I've found that Promo Only will usually indicate specific versions or mixes when applicable.

First of all, shame on them for fading early! Secondly, I've found that Promo Only will sometimes indicate a version, but they are very inconsistent. For example, on that same disc, track 1 is "Stay (Wasting Time)" by Dave Matthews Band, and it is either the "Remix Edit" or "Album Edit" (not sure which), because the run time is a full one minute shorter than the album version.

While it is possible that they took the song directly from the soundtrack, it might also be that the "Pop Mix" and 45/LP version are indeed the same. The mystery remains...

Good points, Aaron. I'm going to see if I can a dub of the "Pop Mix" from the promo CD single and compare it to the commercial CD single, which I do have.

my commercial cd single issued as columbia 78952 has three tracks on it

1-i don't want to miss a thing (4:58)
2-animal crackers (2:36)
3-taste of india (rock remix) (5:52)

no listing for "pop mix radio version" but that version has the same run time as track one on the commercial cd single......

I believe I can finally answer the question I put forth in my initial post on this thread nearly five years ago! I've since acquired what is billed as the "Pop Mix" of Aerosmith's "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" and a subsequent A/B comparison to the single/album version reveals they are indeed identical.

Now, I should disclose that the "Pop Mix" I have comes from the Austrian import CD single, which also contains the "Rock Mix" and the "Pop Radio Edit - No Orchestra", both of which match Jim's descriptions of the same mixes appearing on his promo CD singles. I would also add that the "Rock Mix" is unique in that contains no strings at all throughout the entire song.
