I was just checking on a couple of listings for songs wherein the 45
version is a different speed than the LP version. For instance, Cymarron's "Rings" is listed as having the 45 version slower than the LP version, and :15 seconds longer. Is the 45 version :15 seconds slower with the same ending, or is there a speed difference plus a different fade? This general same question would apply to the Hondells' "Little Honda,", Rene & Rene's "Lo Mucho Que Te Quiero," and the Cuff Links' "Tracy"; is the only difference the speed, or are there edits or different fade-outs? |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but generally if the only difference is that one runs faster or slower (i.e. there's a pitch difference), Pat will simply note there is a difference in pitch. If I had to guess, I would say that the comment above means that there's some difference between the 45 & LP in addition to having a speed difference.

The 45 version of "Rings" drops to a single vocal on the line "Baby What's Ya Doin'" in the beginning of the song while the LP version is multitracked.

I'd like to find out more about "Tracy". Pat writes:
45 time is (2:05); LP time is (2:14) and is slower in pitch than the 45 Only the LP version is available on CD. If I speed up the 2:14 version to be 2:05, will I get the single pitch -- and actual single version? Or will I still not have the single version if I do this? Is the single mono and would the version I make be a stereoized version of the mono single? |

Gordon, yes, the "Tracy" 45 is mono, and a copy is on its way to you.
To answer Paul's original question about Cymarron's "Rings": pitch considerations aside, the song itself runs longer before fading on the 45, whereas the LP/CD version fades earlier. There is one more difference: The first note on the 45 does not appear on the LP/CD version. |

OK with John P's help -- I just sped up the stereo album version to match the 45 pitch and then chopped off approximately the last 8 or 9 seconds, and faded accordingly -- and it seems I have the stereo version of the mono single. All the instruments seem to be there. Whether someone folds this down to mono and truly gets the mono mix I can't say for certain. But to me, I would say the result is the single version in stereo.

Hmmm, several months ago, all I did was speed the LP version of "Tracy" to end at 2:05? To me, it sounds too fast. Do I also need to chop the last 8 seconds off too?

Erie, you're right - that would sound way too fast. In WaveLab I sped up the song by 27 cents to match John P's 45. (That's about 1.55 %). That really only shortened the song by 2 seconds. I then chopped off 8-9 seconds to match the length of the 45 (2:05).
