My commercial 45, confirmed as Bang 551, has a listed time of (2:34), but an actual time of (2:24). This corrected timing now brings the song into line with all of its current "studio version" database CD appearances.

Pat, I bought a CD based on your database findings, but I believe there's a mistake. In the database you list for Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman":
(S) (2:29) GSC Music 15491 36 All-Time Greatest Hits (Box Set) and it would seem this is the only stereo version of the studio recording of "Kentucky Woman" on CD (that isn't "E"). But on my CD, it's live. So I'd add (live) to your listing for this CD - like the other entries in the database that are live for this song. If your CD is different than mine, Pat, or I'm missing something (like this is the stereo studio recording but with applause added at the beginning or end), please let me know. Edited by EdisonLite |

There is a Stereo alternate take floating around, Neil Diamond released it through his Frog King label on LP through Columbia House Record Club. It sounds close to the hit version.

Not an alternate take, Kent. The stereo mix that has only
ever appeared on the Frog King LP is the hit version. I sync'd them years ago to be sure of that. There is one difference though. At 1:51 - 1:52 in the stereo mix you can hear his guitar notes weren't quite "perfect". In the mono master they made them more "perfect" by borrowing them from another part of the song and spliced them there. Just those 2 seconds. Everything else is the same. MM Edit: FWIW, i found out where they took the little guitar snippet from to "fix" it at 1:51. They took it from 1:45 after the words "don't want much" and placed it after the words "gentle touch." So that's how to turn the stereo mix into the 45 version. MM Edited by MMathews |

Yes the GSC cd features a live version - I just failed to transcribe the "live" comment from my notes.

Thanks for pointing out the difference in edits. And glad to know it is the correct hit take.

thanks for the info! I have always noticed that slight warble in the guitar, after
many years ago finding that elusive Frog King LP, but I never noticed that the mono DIDN"T have it! very easy to cut and paste the section to create a true stereo mix of the 45 version! |

Mark, I'll second David's thanks for providing the editing details! The interesting thing is that the edit doesn't fit entirely smoothly, since there's some bass presence already underfoot during the fluffed guitar part that wasn't yet there during the piece that was edited in from a few seconds earlier. But it sounds that way on the Bang 551 vinyl 45, too, and even more obviously, since the bass is mixed a LOT more prominently on the mono 45 than it is on the stereo Early Classics track on Frog King 1.
The Frog King LP track also runs almost one second faster than the Bang 551 vinyl 45, so to match the speed to the 45, stretch it out by 100.6885% in Cool Edit. Toss in some fresh extra bass EQ and serve immediately. |
