My commercial 45, confirmed as Imperial 66075, with deadwax info of "IM
6014", has a listed time of (2:29), but an actual time of (2:38). The three current db CDs that include the original recording of this song run (2:37), (2:38) and (2:39). Pat, I also happened to be doing research recently, on a low-charting personal fave song of mine by him, called "Right Relations", to see if perhaps it had come out somewhere on CD, domestic or import, during the past decade. I found good news. There was a domestically released, EMI-Capitol Special Markets (it also lists "GSC Music" and www.timelessmusic.com), 3-CD set, "36 All-Time Greatest Hits", #15156. This set is not currently in your db. It has every one of his Imperial & UA db hits, but not the last three, on Epic & Big Tree. At a quick glance, this comp also includes 8 other, lower Hot 100 entries of his, that are not on the old Rhino 2-CD set. I remember seeing a ton of these very-affordable 3-CD sets, at places like Circuit City, back in the day. But I never saw this particular one before. It is obviously OOP, but I was recently able to pick one up on-line. Very happy with it. If this set proves too difficult for you to locate, Pat (and it was no picnic for me to find), just ask, and I'll give you one of my "guest reviews" on it. Let me know.... Edited by jimct |

I have a handful of these 36 All-Time Greatest Hits 3-CD artist compilations on the GSC/Timeless Music label. I remember seeing a number of these titles available at Sam's Club years ago. If Pat wishes to start including them in the database, I can do "guest reviews" for my copies as well. (The Brenda Lee release in particular contains several Top 40 hits not available anywhere else on CD!)

I spoke with the owner of GSC many years ago and after explaining my publication, we mutually agreed that the GSC product did not make a good fit for inclusion in my book (now database) so I have never bothered since to even think about including GSC titles.

Pat, would it be acceptable for someone to start a "36 All-Time Greatest Hits" thread and note the available top 40 singles on a given set, on this board? I know I would certainly find something like that useful. The only set I have from that company is the Lettermen and it's among the worst sounding cd collections I own, but it may be possible that someone else on this board may find information others can provide about the various releases somewhat useful. For example I don't know what is on the Brenda Lee set that is unavailable elsewhere...

Tom:
I'm pretty sure the tracks on the GSC/Timeless 36 All-Time Greatest Hits series are simply dubbed from existing CD compilations by each featured artist/band, so I don't believe any new mastering is undertaken. However, I've found the sound quality on GSC/Timeless releases to generally be very good because the tracks mostly appear to be dubbed from early to mid-'90s CD compilations which usually don't contain the overly loud "brickwalled" audio levels and squashed dynamic range typical of modern CDs. You also get a pretty good representation of an artist/band's Billboard Hot 100 singles output on most of these collections. On the downside, the GSC/Timeless compilations contain no liner notes whatsoever (these were clearly intended to be budget releases) and I've never understood why these 36 track sets were spread out over three CDs when they could have just as easily fit onto two discs. The very difficult to find Brenda Lee 36 All-Time Greatest Hits set is the only one where I've found first-time CD appearances of Top 40 hits. You can read more about in the Brenda Lee "Just a Little" thread. Edited by Todd Ireland |

Todd, my Johnny Rivers 3-CD set also has several "never before on CD"
tracks. Personally, I don't know where that "they've simply been dubbed from existing CD compilations" statement first came from, but I believe it to be inaccurate.... |

The Lettermen collection couldn't have been since most of those songs hadn't previously been on cd, and they sound like 10th generation open reel dubs. They're certainly not using any of the Ron Furmanek remixes on the set.

Years ago, I uploaded some tracks onto my digital editing software from several of the GSC/Timeless 3-CD sets I own and directly compared them to equivalent tracks on other artist best-of compilations in my collection. I seem to remember the wave files looking awfully similar and therefore I wound up getting rid of some of those older best-of compilations as a result. Of course, now I no longer have those discs to compare. It's possible I'm wrong about the tracks being dubbed from other CDs, but then I have to wonder for what other reason would I have gotten rid of those older best-of discs then if the mastering wasn't identical to the GSC/Timeless releases?
I should also emphasize that when I mention Brenda Lee's 36 All-Time Greatest Hits being the only GSC/Timeless compilation I've seen containing first time CD appearances, I'm referring specifically to the Top 40 hits. I'm not speaking for the rest of the tracks on these compilations. |

Todd, I think Tom and I are making the same point here.
If there are tracks making their CD debut on these "36 All-Time Greatest Hits" 3-CD sets, than it is a physical impossibility that *all* tracks on them "are simply dubbed from existing CD compilations by each featured artist/band." Those two statements completely contradict each other. I understand that you have done some sonic research on some Top 40 hits. Your point that *those* tracks are cloned from other CDs is highly likely. Ron's excellent research has pointed that out on countless occasions. I am sorry that Tom is so unhappy with the quality of his Lettermen comp. I don't own that one. All I'm speaking about now is my Johnny Rivers set. (Although I also own others in this series, like Glen Campbell and Kris Kristofferson, and they also sound excellent. All 36 tracks. High charters. Low charters. No charters. And whether the song is making its CD debut or not.) Since GSC associated with EMI-Capitol Special Products on these, they had clearly gone through the proper channels, to obtain the original masters, for transfer to CD, in cases where that was necessary......
