I think I just noticed a difference in the 45 (Columbia
4-45944), and the version claiming to be the single
version on the Essential Barbra Streisand.

To anyone who has both of these, listen to the opening
verse when she sings the word "corner". They are
different. Either it's a different vocal, or it's a
punch-in, and she is known for redoing punch-ins and
edits until the vocal is perfect. This is separate from
the more common album version with yet another different
vocal and mix.

What do you think?

There were three different versions of this song on vinyl and all three are different. The soundtrack for the movie had the longest version (album cover shows Barbra and Robert Redford walking on the beach). Then to complicate things Barbra released an album and the record label titled the LP "The Way We Were" with a different vocal version of the song that didn't match the 45 that was issued earlier or the version heard in the movie (the cover of this album has Barbra in a black outfit). The version on Essential may be labeled single version but it doesn't match the 45. I've seen this a few times in recent years where a CD release has a song labeled single version but when you listen it actually is not.

Yes, the 45 RPM has a different vocal performance not found on the LP or any CD.
I turn up the good and turn down the bad!
