Thought it would be an interesting topic for those who enjoy Top 40 hits that have a retro edge.
If you don't know what a "Mashup" is, it's pairing two songs, usually a fairly new one (at the time) with the instrumental of a well known hit or parts of the well known hit. These do sometimes get some radio airplay and many a DJ have done them so well you would think they were official. The two in the 2000's that were radio sensations and well known: Cry Me A River (Hani Flashback Remix) (Instrumental of Let It Whip by the Dazz Band) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEINja7161Y Karmastition (Karma by Alicia Keys, Superstition by Steve Wonder) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdOdXn07Mpg Here is an example that a DJ did mashing Signs and the top 10 hit Urgent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXHlxct6QWs A more recent one that a DJ did mashing 24K Gold and Men In Black. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sUcLGXCkPhM Sometimes I would hear radio stations have some fun with this, but it still generally is a niche thing. If anyone has some great ones, please share. This is by far is one of the best I ever heard and no one would think Nelly and The Bee Gees would work. Highly recommended: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8Kzqzd5IT4 Even our esteemed moderator Aaron had his hand at one with Whitney Houston if I recall. Care to share? Edited by PopArchivist |

Favorite two expressions to live by on this board: "You can't download vinyl" and "Not everything is available on CD."

Maxwell "Ascension (Don't ever wonder)" from 1996
Urban Hang Suite (Columbia). Ascension No One's Gonna Love You, So Don't Ever Wonder (The Tribute Uncut)" It mashes with the SOS Band's "No one's gonna love you." This was available as a cd single too. The whole instrumental was used and it wasn't just a sample. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rZ3_HDHMuo4 Edited by AutumnAarilyn |

Back in the mid 80s when Janet Jackson released "Let's
Wait Awhile" WZOU in Boston put together a mashup (even though the term didn't exist then) of it and America's "Daisy Jane". Still surprises me that there were no plagiarism suits on that one. |

Oddly enough, Janet's 2001 hit "Someone To Call My Lover" sampled the guitar hook from America's "Ventura Highway". |

Around 2006, this one called "Boulevard of
Broken Songs" was a viral sensation. It combined the following songs: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day "Wonderwall" by Oasis "Writing to Reach You" by Travis "Sing for the Moment" by Eminem (the sample of "Dream On" by Aerosmith) https:// youtu.be/wvwzDogVBf8 Edited by TimNeely |
