Hmmmm, a few days ago I did a needle drop of an original stock 45 and mine runs 3:08. I can hear where the long fade tape comes to an edited end, so perhaps that's the difference? My TT has a strobe, which means the speed had to be correct.

Tom, I am sorry that you are frustrated with the way I time records, and, yes, I am a human being that doesn't do it digitally. Your "suggestion" would take me absolutely FOREVER! Doing all of these timings is such a daunting task that even Mr. Whitburn himself, in all of his years publishing books, hasn't bothered to do all of them yet. Now I know Paul Haney is making solid progress on it now, but most timings in the book are still the listed times on the 45. Doing timings with a stopwatch does NOT mean I am inaccurate, however, and I believe that the several hundred timings I have offered up over the past year + has withstood the scrutiny of our fanatically-detail-oriented Board memebers quite well, including our Moderator, Mr. Downey, whose trust you have to EARN around here. I'm pleased to say that I have. The more you do the timings, the better you get at it, and I've got the stopwatch thing down. I cue up each 45 on my DJ turntable first, to get that first note's timing PERFECT. Believe me, I KILL myself to get the timings correct, to the EXACT second, every time. Tom, has it ever occured to you that my stopwatch timings, although low-tech, may in fact be correct? Personally, I know I am getting very frustrated by how many times YOU'VE posted recently that all your stuff is packed up in storage, and unavailable to check for us! Hey, I understand you're moving and all, and I wish you good luck with that, but what good does that info do any of us now, until you've got them once again available to check for us? You can always post a response when you're all moved in and unpacked, and I look forward to it. Sometimes I get the impression that you think you know everything, and that you are perfect, Tom. And that we others sometimes don't measure up. Just my opinion. To me, honestly, it does gets a little tiresome. As for you only knowing about a Jan & Dean promo/stock 45 small time difference, all I can tell you is that I have happened upon MANY others that you simply don't know about. I don't bother to post all of these small differences, because they are less than :03 seconds (Pat's "timing difference threshold"), and I use the "seems-to-be-of-much-more-interest" commercial copy length as the "gold standard" timing for my Board posts. It is possible that this IS the case, Tom, and that you just didn't know about it until now! We are friends, sir, and I greatly respect all of your amazing knowledge, especially with you being so young and all. You sound like you were a straight-A student in school. Well, Tom, so was I, and I know for a fact that others on this Board were as well! I also learned, way back then, that an open mind is a sign of intelligence! Other people here, besides you, Tom, can also sometimes provide accurate details, and maybe we can even enlighten YOU once in a while, the way I see it. Giving us on the Board an occasional "benefit of the doubt" would certainly go a long way, in my opinion, and forgive me for "venting" a little. I know this isn't what this Board is for. Going forward, if I can ever help you, Tom, as I have before, you know I will....
