Jim, I was glad to read your post about specializing in dj 45's so I have a question for you or anyone else that can answer this question. There are rumours of a dj edit of "September Morn" by Neil Diamond that runs (2:58) but I have searched for that edit for years and never found it so can anyone confirm that this dj edit really exists?

Pat: I have it - it does exist. Both the mono and stereo sides of the DJ 45 are timed correctly at (2:58). It features a totally different vocal take by Neil, the piano & orchestration on this mix are also noticably different than both the LP and the stock 45 versions. As you know, those two versions are largely similar; the major difference being the stock 45's remooval of the LP's piano intro. Happy to be of service, Pat. I'll do what I can to help. A little nervous, though - this Board's knowledge and ear for detail is TOTALLY incredible, and I've learned TONS already.

Jim, just curious - does this (2:58) version appear as catalog # Columbia 11175 and does the print on the label say it is taken from the LP "September Morn"? If it does then that would be a very interesting situation where the vocal take was not the vocal take from the LP.

Pat: It does NOT appear as catalog # Columbia 11175. It has what appears to be a special promo-issue-only #, in bold print, AE7 1193. Just below it, non-bold and very small, is the deadwax # ZSP 166526 on the mono side, and ZSP 166523 on the stereo side. Both sides add "1H" at the end, inside the actual deadwax. I had to play that one constantly on the radio back in '80 (we played the LP version), so I was forced to have gained note-for-note familiarity on this song. The vocal take differences here are both numerous and obvious - it's not always this easy to discern. It DOES say it is taken from the LP "September Morn." To my knowledge, just about every Columbia 45, even LP edits and remixed versions, always listed the currently contained LP below the artist/title. I wouldn't conclude that, because of the LP mention, that this DJ 45 must've somehow come from "the loins" of the LP as a result - it didn't. Another similar example: "Two Tickets To Paradise."

I just compared the LP version to the stereo side of the promo 45, and while there is one part where the vocal is different, the rest of the instrumentation and vocals are the same. The only difference is in the part where Neil sings "how it was before" at 1:26. This line is resung, and the song then jumps ahead to where the music changes key. I don't have a dub of the mono side of the promo 45, so I cannot say for sure if that side has the different take.

Interesting find, Aaron. I wonder why Columbia would make such a peculiar decision here to have one measly verse from "September Morn'" re-sung and replaced for radio?

Maybe Neil was unhappy with that one line and was the one who insisted on going back in re-cutting it. You're right, Todd, that it seems odd Columbia would request it. But knowing how singers frequently say they are unhappy with the way a vocal performance came out, I wouldn't be surprised if Neil was the one who wanted it changed. Especially since he had the clout to do this.

Actually, I have a pretty good idea why. If you listen to the LP version, that particular line is in a spot where the song doesn't change key. Later in the song, when the key change occurs, there is no vocal. (This is the spot where the edit occurs.) In order to make the DJ edit sound correct, Neil had to resing that one line over top of the instrumental portion where the edit occurs. |
