Loring/Anderson-"Friends And Lovers"

My commercial 45 has a listed time of (3:50), but an actual time of (3:44).

I have the 3:49 length of Gloria Loring & Carl Anderson's "Friends and Lovers" on the Chicken Soup for the Soul - I'll Be There for You CD (Rhino 75526) and I can confirm that it indeed runs significantly slower than the 45 speed.

Now what's interesting here is that the Gloria Loring self-titled CD on Atlantic 81679 is shown in the database with a 3:49 run time, while the Carl Anderson self-titled disc on Epic 40410 runs 3:45, which is approximately the same length as the 45. I believe both albums were released in 1986 at around the same time when "Friends and Lovers" was a hit, so it appears there may be two LP lengths here. What we need to determine is if the Gloria Loring vinyl LP runs at the same slower speed as its CD counterpart. If so, then the database should probably specify that CDs containing the 3:49 length run at the Gloria Loring vinyl LP speed, while CD appearances sporting the 3:44 length are the 45 and Carl Anderson vinyl LP speed.

By the way, for what it's worth... I find the sound quality of "Friends and Lovers" on the Carl Anderson CD to be far superior to that of the Chicken Soup disc, which sounds muffled and mid-rangey by comparison.

Actually, Dan Hersch did some superb mastering work, especially when paired up with Bill Inglot at Rhino. His name is one that gets my attention in a good way, like Dennis Drake, Steve Hoffman or Vic Anesini.

More likely is that the Chicken Soup CD was a cheapie release from Rhino, whch used whatever source tapes were handy. This release was well after the glory days of Rhino had passed.

FYI, the first compilation I have with "Friends And Lovers" is a two-CD set from Warner Special Products called Love Songs (1988), where it runs 36.0 BPM throughout and runs 3:45 with outro silence. Seems to be the same length as the better-sounding release noted above.

The only other places I have the song are on Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 16 Sweet Nothings (1997) and Time-Life's 2-CD Body And Soul Vol. 12 After Dark (1999; differently-EQ'd digital clone of Body Talk). Both run 36.2 BPM throughout, and both run 3:47 with outro silence. According to my old notes, both sound better than Love Songs, although I can't remember why. The Time-Life discs are almost certainly digital clones of some other, earlier release, although I don't know what release that would be at this point.

I got 3 vinyl items, and compared each LPs with the commercial 45.
This issue was a speed difference. The Gloria Loring self-titled LP speed is slower than the others.

The commercial 45 (Carrere ZS4 06122) actual - 3:44, listed - 3:50   "we" at 3:22 (lyric on "we could be both...")

Just FYI, the actual time on the Eric HTF Vol 14 CD is
3:45.    In this case there's some silence at the start
and end of the cd track. -MM
