Pat:

Looks like we have two more Top 40 singles that are no longer M.I.A. on CD. The first is Jay Ferguson's 1979 hit "Shakedown Cruise", which appears on his Real Life Ain't This Way CD. This was reissued by the Collectors' Choice label last year (catalog #362) and features the 4:12 LP version. The other single now on digital is Jim Capaldi's 1983 entry "That's Love", which can be found on his Fierce Heart CD recently reissued by the Wounded Bird label (catalog #8059). I haven't yet picked up the latter disc, but the run time listed on allmusic.com is 3:34, which is approximately the same as the 45 and LP versions.

Wow you just beat me to the punch on Jim Capaldi as I was going to post a review of that cd tomorrow on the "review" page. No need to do that now as you have let the cat out of the bag. The actual running time that I will list in the 11th edition is 3:33 for "That's Love". Quality on Wounded Bird seems to be no problem as I have yet to hear a bad cd released by those folks.

As for "Shakedown Cruise", I have that one ready to go in the 11th edition also. But you bring up a good point here and that is I should post a new thread that updates all the forum members on the first time on cd songs that I have accumulated since the 10th edition was published. I am just swamped right now trying to verify all of the corrections that forum members have posted in the last two weeks since the board was activated but I will make a note to post that "first time on cd" thread soon.

I have just found a long-misfiled promo 45 for Jim Capaldi's "That's Love". This promo 45 states "Remix" and has a listed time of (3:36) on both sides, but has an actual time of (3:33) for both sides.

I think Todd wrote that initial post in 2004, and Jim just bumped it up when he found the promo remix of the Capaldi tune. I don't think these are "new" additions.

4/10/08 EDIT: I get my Jims and Johns mixed up sometimes. I should see someone about that.

Hi Jim,

There were two promo 45s, released a few weeks apart; original lp version, and then "remix".

<dj copies of this 45 state "remix" >

Does the commercial 45 of "That's Love" have the remix or the original?

Apparently, the remix version is not on CD in the U.S. Are there any overseas CD that have the remix version?

Gordon, my commercial 45 contains the original mix. I have not been able to find any Import CDs that have the remix version. I echo Gordon's interest in finding one, but I'm not very optomistic about its chances of ever turning up on CD. Honestly, I was very pleased to have even seen the Wounded Bird CD of his "Fierce Heart" LP be issued back in 2004.

my commercial 45 issued as atlantic 89849 states on the label a run time of 3:36 and listed the version as "vocal" which atlantic did on almost every "normal" release during the 80's.....but...the 45 actually runs 3:33 and matches the running time of the songs only cd appearance

Recently I’ve been on a Steve Winwood kick, which brought me to That’s Love by Jim Capaldi - specifically the differences between the LP version and the remix. I have the remix from 3 sources - the US 7”, the UK 12”, and digitally from the Dear Mr. Fantasy box.

I also have LP version from the Fierce Heart CD, plus the German VA CD compilation Heart Rock - Rock Für's Herz - Vol. 8. The differences I’ve found:

LP Version
Left channel - this is mixed pretty dry; there’s not a lot of reverb or brightness compared to the right channel. The snare drum is a good example - in the left channel it sounds flat and lifeless, like a demo recording. Whereas in the right channel it’s lively, and has discernible reverb.

Background synths - the synth-strings swelling in the background are spread in stereo, such that the lower notes are in the left channel, and the higher notes are in the right channel.

Percussive Breath™ - this is a subtle background synth voice which almost sounds like the 10cc ‘I’m Not In Love’ vocal effect, except here it’s used as a soft percussion accent, like an open hi-hat. You can first hear it in the intro at 10 seconds in, and then again at 14 seconds in. It’s mostly in the right channel in the LP version.

Remix
The left channel is no longer dry - it’s got reverb, it’s brighter. It really sounds like they narrowed the stereo mix a bit, and as a result all the aspects associated with the right channel of the LP version are heard in both channels - the breathy sound, the upper synths, etc.

I did not notice any instrumental/vocal differences other than the changes to the channel distribution and effects. Curious to know if anyone has catalogued other differences?
