Looking to track down the correct 45 version of this song. Saw mention of it in another thread...

Is this the correct 45 to get? Black label...

Or, is the correct 45...Blue label.

June '67 was right around the time Philips was transitioning from the black label to the blue (though some singles were released on the older black label even into 1968..."Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" by the 4 Seasons was one).
I would say that a black-label copy is an early pressing of the song, a blue-label would be a later pressing. I'm not aware of any mix differences between the 2.

Thanks, Steve for the info. Got an email from Tom Diehl also confirming the black label came first.

I have had a VG copy, at best, of the blue label for awhile. The hand etched deadwax number is 1-40403-5, so it sounds like I have the right one. Just going to try and seek out a better copy.

Thank you Steve and to Tom Diehl for insight into the black vs. blue label info.

Tough to determine which one is the correct 45 version as it appears there were two mixes. I guess it depends on when you bought it. I don't have the black label copy but I have three blue label copies, 1-40403-4 and 1-40403-6. Both with a label time of 2:32 and a run time of 2:39.

My understanding is the black label copies, or at least some of them match the mono LP mix which may just be a stereo fold down. I don't hear much difference.

The difference on the blue label copies (compared to the mono and stereo LP mixes):

The Marianne vocal segment at the start of the song has a longer pause from where it ends and when the guitar begins.

Sections of the instrumentation sound like they've been pushed through a heavy reverb unit. And overloaded.

What Pat notes: When the middle section of "Marianne" singing ends at about 1:18 and right before the music pitch change, it sounds like the background singers go "ohhhhhhhhh" downward a bit on the 45. You will not hear that on the stereo LP version.

During 1:15 to 1:20 it sounds as if the "Marianne Marianne Marianne" section overloaded either the mixing board, compressor, reverb, or all three as there is a scratchy/white noise sound in there, which sounds like cue burn but is on every copy I've found of the blue label version. It stops right before the "ohhhhh" that Pat notes.

Strings near the end just "pop" in, they don't fade in.

I just picked up a black label copy with 40403-2 in the trail off. This mix matches the stereo and lp versions as Pat notes in the database (first mix) . This has a label time of 2:32 and actually runs 2:32. For the blue label copies that I have, in additon to the mix differences aleady noted in this string, the blue label second mix version 40403-4 and 40403-6 run much slower than black label 40403-2. It's a noticable pitch difference. Which is probably why it runs 2:39, not 2:32 as noted on the label.
