Something weird about the Retrospective version of this song when compared with the 45. First, at about :38 and again at 1:25, there appears to be another voice jumping the gun on the "Baby" refrain on the CD but not the 45. Then at 1:56, there is a big difference in the talkover. it's buried in the CD and much more prominent in the 45. Then out of nowhere it sounds as if there was a splice made (as if another part was edited in). Has anyone noticed this and does anyone know what the deal is? They are definitely not the same song throughout. Also, "Don't Go Out Into The Rain" appears in stereo on 2 LP's: Blaze & Greatest Hits #3. Yet no domestic Stereo. Is this available in stereo anywhere?

Sorry - the first song I was referring to was "I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving." I had originally tried to squeeze it into the subject box but it wouldn't fit. Then I added the mention of the second song. Boy I hate eclipses...

Robert, the 45 version of "I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving" (as you described it with louder talkover) must be the version on the CD "Herman's Hermits - Best Of The 60s" on Disky SI 250742 because I can hear what Peter Noone is saying on most of the talkover on that version but can't on the "Retrospective" version.
The Disky CD has a total of 18 cuts, 17 of which are on "Retrospective" and, in addition, "Years May Come, Years May Go." The real gem on the Disky CD is "A Must To Avoid" in true stereo. The rest of the cuts are all in mono as on "Retrospective." |

Should that be noted on the DB? But what kind of distinction? 45 mix versus what? And if there is a voice overdub, then might there be multis somewhere begging to see the light of day? Strange indeed.
As for "A Must To Avoid," thanks for the heads-up. I'll put it on my list. It's also stereo on "The EMI Years Vol 1" but it's the same thin-sounding mix as its LP counterpart, with the percussion and bass mixed way down and the percussion of to the right. It really loses its punch. I'd love to hear a remix of this one that was more faithful to the 45. On the other hand, the 45 sounds overmodulated, too. |

The 45 versions listed in the database for "A Must To Avoid" are mono. Is the stereo version the same as the 45?

Yes, eriejwg. I compared the two and they are identical (although the "Retrospective" version is very, very slightly slower than the Disky CD version.)
And Robert, the stereo Disky version is the same as you describe from "The EMI Years Vol. 1." Dan |

Some of the later songs on ABKCO's Retrospective cd were re-mixed back to mono from the existing multitrack tapes....I Can Take Or Leave Your Loving was one of them, and i believe Dandy is another...

over on Mr. Daly's website, he indicates the stereo "A Must To Avoid" to be a different recording, however I've never considered it to be.

It's always sounded like the same take of the song, to me... |

Pat, asking why you have "45 version" for 2 the CDs with the mono version of this song?
