Although "What I Got" by Sublime didn't make the Billboard Hot 100 (probably due to lack of a retail single), it did make the Hot 100 Airplay chart, reaching #29. There are at least THREE different promo CDs for this song, all of which contain various cleaned-up versions of the Leary Reprise and Kahne mixes.

GAS5P-3775
1. Kahne Radio Edit (2:51)
2. Leary Reprise Radio Edit (3:02)
3. Kahne Album Version (2:51)
4. Leary Reprise Album Version (3:02)

GAS5P-3812
(No Mo Fo Edit)
1. Leary Reprise Radio Edit (3:02)
2. Kahne Radio Edit (2:51)

MCA 3874
(Very Clean Radio Version)
1. Leary Reprise Radio Edit (3:02)
2. Kahne Radio Edit (2:51)

Our station only received a copy of the third promo CD single (Very Clean Radio Version), and we played cut 1 more often than cut 2. I do know that the "Very Clean" versions on this disc also remove the word "pot," while the edits on the first promo CD have this word in tact.

Thanks for the info, Aaron. Can you confirm which mix is which? I know one mix starts with a drum machine and an intro of ~10 seconds, while the other starts cold.

Somehow I never heard this song on the radio as a current. Did the separate mixes dominate at chr vs modern rock, or was it more of a coin-flip at each station?

The Kahne mix is the one that starts with the drum machine. The Leary Reprise mix starts cold with vocals and the acoustic guitar.

When the song was a current, I don't remember hearing it on any station in my area other than the one I worked for. We didn't have a local modern rock format, and our main CHR competitor was very safe. Which mix is most commonly heard today?

What's interesting is that even on the "Very Clean Radio Version" of the Kahne mix, you can still hear the low-volume sample of Richard Pryor saying "aw, f**k, you can't even sing" just before the drum machine starts. I imagine most stations cued past this, since it was very hard to hear anyhow.

To EdTop40:

In the Albany-Schenectady-Troy NY market the 'Larry Reprise' mix got the most airplay.
