Pat, my commercial 45, which is stereo, has a listed time of (4:45), but an actual time of (3:35). This seems to approximately reflect the info you currently state in this song's notes for the short side of the DJ 45, but this timing exists on my stock 45. My deadwax is "62151-4A S 02A", preceded by a crossed-out "G7129F".

My commercial 45 that states and runs (4:45) has the matrix number 62151 02B-X 5-2-73.

I have two dj copies of this 45, one has the (4:45) version on both sides and the other has the short version on both sides with matrix number 62151-4AS 17B G-7129-AS-1C RE-1 (3:38).

Pat:

I thought I'd revisit this topic since there are currently two database CD appearances of the Temptations' "Plastic Man" stating: "this is the DJ 45 edit" as the basis of its comment. Assuming Jim's short 45 version running 3:35 is identical to the short DJ 45 edit, do you agree it might create less confusion for readers if the base comment next to the two database CDs in question were to instead read: "this is the short 45 version"?

Hi Jim & Todd & Pat - Not to want to complicate this thread further, but my short promo (stereo on one side mono on other) has a stated and actual time of 3:45, not 3:38. #'s: 62151-S-RE1 and G7129f-62151-s-17a; G7129-AS-1B RE1 (that's the stereo side). My long promo version (also mono/stereo)has a stated time of 4:45 and actual time of 4:44. I did not time the mono sides. #'s are: 62151-S G7129f-62151-17B; G7129-AS-1A. My commercial copy is the long version and as far as I can tell, it's the same as the long promo version. Is it possible we have a third version? Or maybe the 3:35 version is a DJ-edit and the other two are commercial 45 versions. I'll leave that to you guys and I'll wait to see what you think.

I will complicate the matter further for you Robert as my short mono dj copy of Plastic Man with matrix number G7129F-62151-4A M17B G7129F-AM-1C RE1 runs (3:33) not (3:38) as stated on the record label. I cannot give you the stereo running time as there is a big scratch on my copy that makes my copy skip.

As an update to this post, I just obtained another dj edit with stated running times of (3:45) on both the mono and stereo sides. The mono side runs (3:45) while the stereo side runs (3:43). Matrix number on this 45 in its entirety is G7129F-62151-M-17A G7129-AM-1B RE-1 on the mono side and G7129F-62151-S-17A G7129-AS-1B RE-1 on the stereo side.

My stock 45, which is Gordy 7129F, has black lettering. The matrix number is G7129F-62151-07A with a circled "2" after it. The label states 4:45 and it basically runs that length (I'd say more like 4:46ish, but hey).

Its title is just "Plastic Man," with no "The."

To create this version -- which evidently is the long single edit -- from the LP version on Masterpiece, simply remove 3:52.4 to 5:01.3 (edit on "man") and maybe fade out a few seconds early.
