Does anyone know where I can find the original "hit" version of Melba Montgomery's "No Charge" on CD? (The song doesn't appear in the database, but it did reach #39 on Billboard.) When looking the song up on www.allmusic.com, I find nearly every CD appearance is on a label like Dominion, K-Tel, or Madacy, all of which are notorious for issuing cheap re-recorded versions of songs by the original artists. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

well.....the one "fake" cd i have which contains the song
is titled "the true story of country" on music digital 11-
813....this version runs 3:23 and is NOT the same as the
vinyl 45.......the vinyl 45 states a run time of 3:09 but truly runs 3:11...paul...i do see a few cds on allmusic.com
which state run times of 3:09-3:12....so it's possible that
one of those cd contains the proper vinyl 45
version......i'll post anything back if i get one of those
cd's

Ed:

Several years ago, I did find Melba Montgomery's "No Charge" on a Time-Life 2 CD set called Classic Country: 1969-1975 (catalog #R808-14). Given Time-Life's excellent track record of using original hit versions, I purchased the set and am pretty confident this is the correct hit version of "No Charge". The song's run time on the Classic Country: 1969-1975 compilation is 3:11 and in stereo. (Was the 45 issued in stereo?)

And promo 45 singles have Mono/Stereo versions. And time out to exactly 3:11.
I turn up the good and turn down the bad!
