the 45's face states the run time as 3:32 but it actually runs 3:52 like almost all the entries in the db.....this should should be reflected in the db....

I might as well just enter the information that I entered in the database moments ago--

the commercial 45 featured the German lyrics of this song on one side with a stated running time of (3:32) but the actual running time is (3:51) and the English lyrics appear on the flip side with a stated and actual running time of (3:50); dj copies of this 45 featured the German lyrics and run (3:51) not (3:22) as stated on the record label

I asked this a while back but maybe someone has some new feedback.

All the New York Stations used to play a version which combines both the English and the German. Does anyone know where this version came from and if it exists on CD?

Thanks

Fetta, that version was an in-house, custom-made edit done by the radio station (Z100?), which took portions of both the German and English versions, and combined them into one "unique" version. Epic never put it out that way as an "offical" release, so I'd say there's no chance it'll ever appear that way on a CD. Sorry, Fetta - I know you were hoping for a different answer.

Seems there were two, maybe three official releases of this song at the time the song was hitting the charts:

The single / album version, as listed in the database.

The "Club Mix" of "99 Red Balloons," as listed in the database.

...and a third mix, which I'm wondering if it was legit or not...

Discogs has it here in red vinyl, and a found a copy on eBay in green vinyl.

These copies claim to Special Version / Limited Editions for collectors on CBS / Columbia International (made in Mexico).

Side A is 99 Luftballons, labeled as running 6:58.
Side B is 99 Red Balloons, labeled as running 6:59.

Has anybody ever come across one of these "special edition" color vinyl releases? Are these versions REALLY 7 minutes long? And if the mixes exist, has anybody ever seen them on CD?

I'm always grateful for the help of the community on things like this!

Sorry, I can't help with any of the 12"/import details, but I thought this
might be of interest here. I recall that all Epic U.S. stock and promo 45s
for this song were exactly the same on both sides. German lyrics version
on one side; English lyrics version on the other side. FYI, our station opted
to play the English lyrics. But out of curiosity, we asked our local Epic
promotion guy for his best take on the national U.S. Top 40
German/English v split, as the German version appeared in Billboard/most
syndicated countdown shows. I remember him saying, "our best info has it
55-60% German version, 40-45% English version. We have no preference,
as long as it sells!" Well, the Epic guy appeared spot on, as shown by this
razor-thin margin! Check this out:

As of today (3/3/12), 316 ARSA charts show the German version charting:
http://www.las-solanas.com/arsa/charts_item.php?hsid=102  &n bsp;

Also as of today, 288 ARSA charts show the English version charting:
http://www.las-solanas.com/arsa/charts_item.php?hsid=47032&n bsp;

(thanks to my buddy Paul Haney - he knows what I'm talkin' about! :) )

(PS-extra characters keep appearing after "102/47032" - omit them to
see)

Holy cow -- what a site! Thanks for the link, Jim! (I remember the German version; my wife remembers the English version.) :)

My friend George has a promotional copy with the German version on both sides, the label time says 3:32. I haven't been able to get a dub of it from him yet but he says the matrix info on both sides say ZSS171373-1A on both sides if anyone else has that pressing.

I recently purchased a promotional copy on ebay that looks just like the stock 45 (english on one side, german on the other) with the listed label times as the stock issue but it has not yet arrived in the mail (I have another promo copy currently in storage that I believe is the same pairing, but it's going to be a while before I can get there to check it out).
Live in stereo.

As this was
not the major point of my previous post, I did not bother to dig out my
1984 promo 45s box to 100% confirm my memory. However, due to
Tom's assertion that a "German Version on both sides" promo 45 did
indeed exist, I just did. I own/just pulled out 3 promo 45 copies; 2 of
them are German/English, while my 3rd promo copy does indeed have the
German version on both sides. I'd stored all 3 promo copies in a single
plastic 45 sleeve, with copy 3 in the back, out of sight (and out of mind
since '84, 'til now!) We got a ton of promo copies for it at the station back
in the day; and the German/English was on the vast majority of them; glad
I was paying close enough attention back then to have noticed/snagged
one German/German promo 45 copy. And yes, the deadwax info on both
sides of it is exactly the same as what Tom just provided. Thanks, Tom!
