I've always been puzzled about the mixes labeled on the CD single and promo single. I have the full-length cassette, and the version on my tape is exactly the same as the "Timber Mix" from the CD single. In other words, the "Album Version" on the single is completely different than what's on my full-length.

I'm wondering if this is a case of mislabeling the singles, or if there is more than one version of It Takes A Thief--one with the true album version and one with the "Timber Mix."

I just obtained a second US promo CD for this, so let me provide all of the promo info I have.

TBCD 618
1. Flex Clean Radio Edit (4:04 listed & actual)
2. J Ski Clean Radio Edit (4:13 listed & actual)
3. Timber Clean Radio Edit (4:01 listed & actual)

It seems odd that this promo has a lower catalog number. The first two remixes are very underground and not radio friendly, and I had never heard them prior to receiving the promos years later.

TBCD 620
1. Timber Radio Edit (4:01 listed & actual)*
2. Radio Version (4:08 listed; 4:04 actual)

*This is the version we played on air, and we played it from this promo. Cut 3 on TBCD 618 is the same mix/edit.

Now, here is a RARE promo CD, and I'm pretty sure it was a UK issue (no indication, except they spell "unauthorised" with an 's'). I don't usually collect import promos, but some of these versions/edits were not issued on any US promo CD; however, they were issued on the US 12" promo vinyl. (Printed times only on this one, since Pat doesn't list imports, but I'm happy to time it for anyone interested.)

TBO617CD
1. Joey's 4 Minute Mix - Radio Edit (4:02)*
2. Original Clean Radio Version (4:04)
3. Flex Remix Clean Radio Edit (4:04)
4. Dave Bellochio Clean Radio Edit (4:20)
5. QD III Clean Radio Remix (4:32)
6. Acapella (3:39)

*This is the same as the Timber Radio Edit on TBCD 618 & 620.

my commercial cassingle issued as tommy boy 7617 contains
on the A-side the 'radio version' with a listed run time
of 4:01 on an actual time of 4:04...on the B-side is the
'timber radio edit' with a listed run time of 4:04 but
actually runs 4:01.....it's interesting that the promo cd
single and the commercial cassingle have the tracks
reversed....it also should be noted that on the face of
the cassingle it contains a parental advisory sticker
even though both tracks are clean and radio
friendly...also to be noted is the songs are basically
the same but the 'timber radio edit' is pitched up a
little...

When you say the songs are "basically the same" are you referring to the two mixes on the cassette single? The mixes on promo CD TBCD 620 are drastically different mixes.

Ed's comments re the cassette single also apply to the
7-inch commercial single. That is, the A-side is the
"Radio Version" and the B-side is the "Timber Radio
Edit".

There are a number of CDs in the database listed as
containing the "radio version which is the 45
version". I have three of these CDs:

- Rhino 75975 - MTV The First 1000 Years - Hip-
Hop

- Razor & Tie 81011 - '90s Style
- Tommy Boy/Rhino 73868 - It's Still Workin': Tommy
Boy's Classic Cuts

Only the first of these contains the exact 45 version,
which is censored and starts with "Come on y'all let's
take a ride/Don't you say a word just get inside". The
version on the other two CDs is uncensored and starts
with "Come on y'all let's take a ride/Don't you say
s*** just get inside".

The 45 is one of those Tommy Boy 45s that also has the
Collectables logo. These are not reissues; these 45s
were in print while the song was a hit.
